This post is long, please read all the way to the end.
LaSalle is one of the earliest of all Monroe County settlements. For many years, it was the only church serving families between the city of Monroe and the Ohio state line.
In 1835, a small group formed a Sunday School, having no place of worship, met in homes and schools.
January 7, 1844, the church was organized by a group from First Presbyterian Church of Monroe. Rev. William L. Buffett was called to be the first Stated Supply Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of LaSalle.
August 18, 1856, Andrew Spafford Hull and his wife Priscilla Hull conveyed, by warranty deed, land at the corner of Rt. 25 and W. Stein Rd to First Presbyterian Church of LaSalle for purposes of building a place of worship.
June 3, 1857, with a $500 loan from Presbytery and a wealth of donated material, the completed church was dedicated by the congregation with Rev. Robert R. Salter as Stated Supply Pastor. 1946 – the fellowship hall was added at an estimated cost of $5,000.
June 10, 2007, the church celebrated 150th Anniversary.
The mission of the church hasn’t changed in almost 200 years. Our statement in part, reads “To build relationships that lead our congregation in ministries that allow us, together, to embrace the fullness of the Kingdom of God.”
As of November 30, 2025, the doors will permanently close. History has been made. Memories have been made. Friendships have been made. Baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals have occurred. Mission statement has been fulfilled. The roast beef dinners and community events that evolved into the more recent years have embraced “and built the relationships that led our congregations through the years in ministries that allowed us, together, to embrace the fullness of the Kingdom of God.”
We, the remaining members of First Presbyterian Church of LaSalle will always have our community that supported us through the years in our hearts. As the saying goes, “when one door closes, another opens”. We are pleased to announce that our commitment to the community, in the fullness of the Kingdom of God, will continue in ways that were not expected just a year ago. With our faith in God, we pray the next chapter of this 168-year-old landmark will fulfill the needs of our community, nourishing both young and old together, diverse and loving.
Until then, please stop in at our last Fall Bazaar, November 8, 9-2. Tell us your stories of the little church on the corner and let us tell you how thankful we are for your support through the years.
