We learn in scripture that Joseph was a carpenter. In Mark 6:3, Jesus is described as a carpenter. In Matthew 13:55, He is called a carpenter's son. What is a carpenter? I know...silly question. We know that a carpenter is a woodworker. Right? Did you know that the Greek word that is translated carpenter is tectōn, which is a general term for a craftsman or builder, and these workers were considered to be highly skilled and well-respected? While in classical Greek, the term is typically used for a woodworker; in Koine, the Greek of the Septuagint and New Testament, it refers to builders generally and is often qualified by the material they worked with. One example is found in 2 Samuel 5:11 in which the plural form is used twice describing "workers of stone and workers of wood". The term is only used in the New Testament twice. You got it...in the scriptures listed above. These scriptures only state that Joseph and Jesus were builders or craftsmen. We can speculate that they were woodworkers, but Israel's landscape at the time contained few trees but had much stone. Perhaps He also worked with stone?
You may ask, "Does this really matter?" Not really. Jesus is Jesus, and He was a carpenter, no matter what material he used for crafting. This does make for an interesting look at words and how our interpretation can affect how we view that word and its meaning.
