Proverbs 16:20 Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the LORD will be joyful.

LISTENING FOR INSTRUCTIONS?

We love to be heard! In fact, I have been in places where the crowd's noise was deafening because everyone spoke louder just to be heard. But to listen to instructions, we must be quiet, respectful, and attentive. Yes, God desires to give instructions and bless his children, but we must be quiet enough to hear. In those quiet moments of instruction, our faith will grow and fill our hearts with great joy. Why? Because the God of creation cares enough to speak, instruct, and lead our lives. LISTENING FOR INSTRUCTIONS?

Psalm 121:7 The LORD keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. 8 The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.

NOW AND FOREVER!

In this sinful world, full of destruction and death, it's easy to forget that the God of Heaven looks out for his children. And yes, only he knows the exact number of our days here on earth. Knowing this, we should place our trust in God, and God alone, and believe, despite all the difficulties of this world, that our Heavenly Father is always watching over us. THE LORD KEEPS WATCH OVER YOU AS YOU COME AND GO, BOTH NOW AND FOREVER.

John 21: 20 Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” 21 Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?”
22 Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”

STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR PATH!

So many people are so enamored with others' paths that they stumble on their own. Like Peter, maybe we feel we need to distract ourselves, even the Lord, from our daunting past. But the call always remains the same, "As for you, follow me." In other words, don't get distracted, mind your own business, and stay focused. It's a good word for a world addicted to keeping up with influencers', celebrities', and acquaintances' social posts. STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR PATH!

2 Samuel 19: 9 And throughout all the tribes of Israel there was much discussion and argument going on. The people were saying, “The king rescued us from our enemies and saved us from the Philistines, but Absalom chased him out of the country. 10 Now Absalom, whom we anointed to rule over us, is dead. Why not ask David to come back and be our king again?”

FAITHFULNESS IS BUILT BY BEING FAITHFUL!

The steady pace of spiritual growth often bores some, so they look for something or someone new. All Israel was infatuated with Absalom and his new way of leading, so they literally rebelled against King David. Like most people, they are impetuous. Only by experiencing loss do we abandon the proposed new way and return to what really works. It is a lesson, like Israel, that we often have to learn the hard way: Don't leave the path of slow, steady spiritual growth for the temptation of overnight success. FAITHFULNESS IS BUILT BY BEING FAITHFUL!

Proverbs 16:9 We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.

IN STEP!

Yes, we can plan, design, and lay out our grand plans for a prosperous life, but we cannot control life or death. No one planned for 2020 or the meltdown that followed COVID. Nor do we know the day or hour of the end of our lives. God knows it all! And if our plans don't include knowing the One who knows it all, we are in for disappointment. So we should ask and submit our plans to God, because it is better to be in step with God than out of step with our plans. IN STEP!

1 John 3:18 Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. 19 Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God. 20 Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.

TALK IS CHEAP!

It's not easy to tell the difference between a fake and a real Rolex wristwatch. In fact, the only way to tell is often to examine the watch's inner workings. Likewise, a person may profess to be a Christian, but the proof of their authenticity is found in unselfish, sacrificial giving to others. This proves that God's love has not only been received but also understood and applied in relationships with others. TALK IS CHEAP, LOVE IS AN ACTION!

Psalm 119: 65 You have done many good things for me, LORD, just as you promised.
66 I believe in your commands; now teach me good judgment and knowledge.
67 I used to wander off until you disciplined me; but now I closely follow your word.
68 You are good and do only good; teach me your decrees.

GOOD

So many miss the wonderful revelation of God's goodness because they turn away from Him amid heartache and disappointment. But those who are faithful can see that God works all things together for His good and His children. Yes, it requires faithfulness that sets aside overwhelming feelings and a mind cluttered with doubt. In the end, we will say as the Psalmist, "You are good and do only good." GOOD!

John 14: 15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

OBEDIENCE IS FAITH!

Yes, obedience to the commandments of Jesus is an expression of faith. It means trusting Jesus more than trusting ourselves. Let's remember, obedience to God has nothing to do with how we feel or what we think, and everything to do with trusting Him. And, as with all faith in God, it elicits a response. That God-response is the filling and enablement of the Holy Spirit. So when we no longer trust ourselves and obey, God sends help that enables us to overcome with incredible power. OBEDIENCE IS FAITH!

John 13: 34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

LOVE IS DIFFERENT!

We would think our wisdom, miracles, and popularity would prove we are Jesus's disciples. Even though we often try to prove it in the ways above, which are important, it is none of the above. Jesus's commandment to his disciples is the same commandment relevant to our journey with God today. Yes, it's our love for each other that proves there is something different about us. No, it's not our scathing judgmentalism or raging skepticism. It's pure love that comes only from God and transforms our hearts and minds. But it's never the first choice of our flesh, so we have to yield our pride, rein in our stubbornness, and allow mercy and grace produced by love to rule in our hearts. LOVE IS DIFFERENT!
