As we enter another month navigating extraordinary challenges, the congregation of San Lorenzo mission in La Placita is announcing that our 2020 Fiesta celebration will not take place. Annually, this time of year has been used to ensure the physical upkeep of the historic church and come together from far and wide to celebrate the history and deep roots through prayer and fellowship.
While we are all feeling personal impacts of COVID19 and will continue to experience long after this pandemic has passed, may we use this time to reflect on our faith the optimism that we will come out strong.
This year the Feast of San Lorenzo (August 10) can be celebrated in our own way. As in many years before, during the 2nd week of August, especially the early mornings of the 11,12,13, the Northern Hemisphere will experience the largest number of viewable meteors and this meteor shower (The Perseids Meteor Shower) has a special connection to San Lorenzo. In Italy (where San Lorenzo was martyred) the show of these shooting starts has been famously known as ‘San Lorenzo’s Tears’. On the weekend before/after San Lorenzo’s Feast Day, we encourage you to read about his life and his death. Take a moment to look up at the sky. Experience the sight of the martyr’s tears light up the sky. Empathize with San Lorenzo as he drew his last breaths. Ask our Lord for the strength to bare the crosses we each have and above all, give thanks for what we have.
You are invited and encouraged to share memories, pictures of previous fiestas and your own way of celebrating and honoring San Lorenzo.
While we will not be gathering in person, our community can remain in solidarity and we can use this time to spread kindness and good will towards those we encounter. Continued blessings to you all and we look forward to the day we can celebrate together as one.
