According to ancient tradition, Saint Helena journeyed to Jerusalem in search of the Cross of Christ. Near Calvary, beneath a pagan temple, three crosses were discovered. To identify the Cross of the Savior, each was brought before a dying woman; when she touched the third Cross, she was immediately healed. Saint Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem, then raised the True Cross before the assembled faithful, who fell to their knees crying, “Lord, have mercy!” Thus the instrument of Christ’s humiliation was exalted as the glorious sign of humanity’s redemption.

In 335, following the dedication of Constantine’s churches at Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre, the Cross was again solemnly raised before the faithful on September 14. From this celebration arose the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, when the Church proclaims that the instrument of death has become the Tree of Life and the victorious sign of Christ’s saving love.
