The Table: United Church of Christ of La Mesa

The Table: United Church of Christ of La Mesa Doing Together What We Cannot Do Alone We respect the many and varied faith backgrounds of those who worship with us.

As an Open and Affirming Christian congregation, the United Church of Christ of La Mesa believes that God loves and accepts every person. The ministry of Jesus included all people, even those excluded by society. With God’s guidance, we covenant with one another to serve our community by welcoming all people without regard to sexual orientation, gender identity, social or economic status, physical

or mental abilities, heritage or race. All are welcome at the Table and into the full life and ministry of our church.

This coming Sunday, we'll be packing "Meals Made Easy" for Feeding San Diego to have ready to go, nutritiously balanced, easy to prepare meals for folks who need help affording food. Staff at go report these are very popular items, and they're always flying off the shelves!

Join us Sunday to help us put our faith into action, serving our neighbors as an integral part of how we worship the God of Love.

And if you'd like more info about how to do with the communities you're connected with, comment for more info!

This past Sunday was the celebration of Pentecost, where we remember the story of the coming of the Holy Spirit, rushing in like wind and fire.
The Spirit enabled people gathered from all sorts of different places across the world to comprehend what one another were saying.

This was connection across languages and cultures.

Dr Jerrell Robinson noted that this wasn't because the Holy Spirit made them all the same: "The Holy Spirit didn't create uniformity--it created understanding"

Especially in light of the attack at the this past week, it is vital to proclaim the ways the Spirit calls us to be people who are committed to our mutual humanity.

To be people who speak peace,
people who break down walls of fear,
people who resist racism, violence, and hatred.
To be people who open their hearts when the world tries to make us separate from one another.

For those for whom this past week's violence leaves them feeling targeted, wondering whether this country has room for them, in Dr. Robinson's words,

"Pentecost answers:
YES! Yes, there is room.
Yes, you belong.
Yes, your language, your culture, your humanity, they all matter to God."

We are grieved and horrified by the shooting today at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

We stand with our Muslim neighbors who are reeling, overwhelmed, and afraid tonight. We pray for the families and community of those who were killed, along with all who were harmed, frightened, or re-traumatized by this violence.

We recommit ourselves to being people who love our neighbors, and who stand in solidarity with our fellow worshipping communities and their sacred spaces. No one should ever feel afraid to worship, and to gather in community.

More ways to stand with those most impacted will be shared as they arise. For now, we commit ourselves to loving action in great and small ways, to counter Islamophobia and hate, and pray with those in fear and grief tonight.

Celebrate Life, Love, Hope, and Joy this Sunday!

Easter recalls us to the story of Jesus’ resurrection following the most brutal death imaginable.

And it also recalls us to our own capacities for renewal, restoration, and recovery.
Even and especially through that which seems unimaginable.

Resurrection doesn’t promise we will never know hurt, loss, fear, or grief. It promises that these will not be the end of the story.

Our very earth reminds us that nothing is ever truly lost.
That which dies returns to the earth and becomes the ground where new life springs forth.
Winter yields to spring.
The sun always rises,
and even new stars in our galaxies are born from the collapsed stuff of dying stars.

New life is not often immediate.
But it is incessant.

On Easter, we celebrate all the ways that love wins,
life is stronger than the worst death,
and hope manages to surprise us.

Join us for Worship at 10 am (kids will stay in the service), with coffee, brunchy snacks, and an Easter Egg hunt right after worship!

On Good Friday, we remember that when boundless love walked among us, we did not recognize him.

When embodied peace stood before us, we chose force.

When God came close, reaching for us, we turned away.

And yet, Jesus walked this path before him. He experienced the worst humankind can do, in ultimate solidarity with every one of us. Whatever suffering we endure, God in Jesus has endured it as well.

This Good Friday, join us for a meditation walk through the story of Jesus’ crucifixion.

As you journey through the ancient story that resonates across the centuries, you also are invited to journey through your own heart.

The Journey begins t 10AM.

You can trade in love
for a bag of coins.
And even then,
even still,
even now,
Jesus will love you enough to
wash your feet.
If you hear nothing else in the gospel,
hear this.

“Jesus is not just performing; he is extending genuine mercy. All confrontational nonviolence done in Jesus’ name invites the oppressor to be human again, not through dehumanizing power, but through the humility of our interdependence on each other. It is both unsurprising and devastating that, after his feet have been washed, Judas still runs to betray his Lord—just as it remains unsurprising and devastating when our enemies and oppressors do the same. But Jesus—truly human, and truly God—knew this would happen.

And he washes Judas's feet, anyway.”

I expected to be grounded.
I expected a “How could you?”
But when I got home that night,
my dad held me close and said,
“A car is just a car, but you are my child.
The only thing that matters is that you are okay.”
And I knew it for what it was.
It was mercy. It was love.
It was the thing that mattered most.

What does the Lord require of us?
To remain humble, loving, and just
Keeping the heart of the gospel in mind
Let us remember: do what is right
