Unsettled: What to Do When Your Emotions Take Over

Have you ever made a decision while you were angry, hurt, afraid, or overwhelmed… only to look back later and wonder, “What was I thinking?” The difficult thing about strong emotions is that they don’t always make us feel confused. Sometimes they make us feel absolutely certain. Certain we’re right. Certain we know what someone meant. Certain we’re seeing the situation clearly. But what if we’re not?

There’s a saying that compares our emotions to boiling water: when the water is unsettled, we can’t see a clear reflection. And sometimes the same thing happens inside of us.

In this message, “Unsettled,” we’ll explore what Scripture teaches us about anger, fear, emotional decision-making, and learning to recognize when our perspective has become distorted. We’ll look at the wisdom of James and Proverbs, and at Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19, where we discover something incredibly encouraging: God doesn’t stand at a distance waiting for us to get ourselves together. God meets us in the middle of our unsettledness.

Love God & Love People - Love Becomes Our Witness

What if the clearest sign that Jesus is changing your life isn’t what you know—but who you’re becoming? We’re all being shaped by something. Our habits. Our relationships. What gets our attention. What we pursue. Even the small choices we make every day. But Jesus invites us into something deeper than simply believing the right things or trying harder to behave better. He invites us to remain in Him—and as we do, His Spirit begins changing us from the inside out.

Love. Joy. Peace. Patience. Kindness. Goodness, Faithfulness. Gentleness. Compassion. Grace.

And here’s the beautiful part: what God grows in us was never meant to end with us. The people around us should begin experiencing something of Jesus through the people we’re becoming.

So here’s the question: Am I becoming more like Jesus?

Love God & Love People - Where does your love stop?

Where does your love stop? It's easy to love people we enjoy being around. People who understand us. People who think like us. People who make life easier. But what about the people we'd rather avoid? The people who frustrate us. The people we disagree with. The people who have hurt us. The people whose lives or beliefs we simply don't understand.

In Week 3 of Love God & Love People, we turn to the surprising story of Jonah—a man who knew exactly how merciful God was and desperately wanted that mercy to stop before it reached his enemies. Because Jonah wasn't simply running away from God. He was running away from a people he didn't want God to forgive. And his story forces us to confront an uncomfortable possibility: Maybe the greatest obstacle to loving difficult people isn't how difficult they are. Maybe it's forgetting how much grace we've received ourselves.

Throughout Scripture, people draw lines—and God keeps crossing them. Jesus moved toward outsiders, sinners, enemies, and people everyone else had pushed aside. And the gospel reminds us that when we were outside the circle, Jesus crossed the line for us. So what happens when God's grace begins changing the way we see the people around us? And who might Jesus be inviting us to see differently?

Love - Making God our Center

What has the strongest pull on your heart? Most of us would say that God matters to us. But if we looked honestly at what receives most of our time, attention, energy, thoughts, and emotions… would our lives tell the same story?

In Week Two of Love God & Love People, we look at one of Jesus' most familiar teachings—“Seek first the Kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33)—and discover that Jesus wasn't simply telling us to rearrange our priorities. He was inviting us to reconsider what sits at the center of our lives. Because whatever captures our hearts eventually shapes the way we see everything else.

Love Rocks - I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)

Love Rocks — Whole Lotta Love

What has captured your heart? We all want things. We chase success, relationships, comfort, approval, experiences, and the hope that the next thing will finally make us feel satisfied. But sooner or later, the thirst comes back. In Week 3 of our Love Rocks series, we use Led Zeppelin’s classic “Whole Lotta Love” to explore one of the most powerful forces in the human heart: desire. Now desire isn’t the enemy. God created us to long, love, pursue, and hunger for something more. The problem begins when we ask temporary things to satisfy eternal longings.

Through James 1, Psalm 63, John 4, Galatians 5, and Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well, we discover why the things we chase can leave us wanting more—and how Jesus doesn’t destroy our desires. He redeems them. Temporary things make wonderful gifts, but they make terrible saviors. Jesus offers something this world cannot: living water for thirsty souls and a new way of living where our desires are transformed, our loves are reordered, and our hearts find what they were created for.
