A great time was had by all Sunday as we celebrated the 171st anniversary of the founding of St. James. We learned of the faith, courage and tenaciousness of Hannibal Pratt, who founded our church at 27 years of age and went on to found St. John’s in Columbus. He shepherded both churches and added the church in Richmond before tragically passing at the age of 30.

The service was derived from the prayer book in use at the time, with the same readings. Afterwards, the church enjoyed an 1850s-style picnic lunch, enhanced by the awesome fiddling skills of Robert Herridge.

St James Episcopal Church, La Grange, will celebrate its 171st anniversary with a special service on Sunday, August 16, at 9:30 in the morning at its 1885 historic building at 156 North Monroe Street. The services of Holy Communion with follow the 1789 prayer book with Shakespearean type language and music used in the 1850s. Following the service, a “picnic-type” lunch in the Parish Hall will replicate an early Fayette County meal. Visitors are joyfully encouraged to join us in this celebration. Do note the time is different for this single service.
