Have you ever seen a Zinkie before? Pieces like this remind us that every monument has a story worth preserving. H. E. Goodwin was a major and quartermaster in the Civil War. Quartermasters procured clothing, equipment, animals, and services on an unprecedented scale, while managing a network of field depots and transportation systems to supply soldiers. In 1862, the department also took on the responsibility of burying the war dead and maintaining national cemeteries.
