The times we live in challenge us. Now you might say: yes, that’s always been the case. That’s true, but it seems that—more so than in many decades—we’ve entered a period where so many certainties, fundamental truths, and core values are being shaken up. And where, then, should we find our focus, our salvation, and our joy? A higher power, a worldly power, ourselves, one another? How do we ensure that we not only survive, but truly live? These are certainly not simple questions, but they are important. We will have to search for the key. And it may be closer than we think. Let’s go find it!

Jazz and the Social Conscience. A nod to jazz and its contributions and struggles with social justice. While we learn and unlearn prejudicial and biased actions, spoken words, and internal processing, jazz plays a role as both a creative outlet for many marginalized musicians, as well as providing a platform to bring about change.

Chuck Berendes will share his decades long experience providing immigration law in the La Crosse area as well as his passion for helping others in need.

Chuck was born and raised in La Crosse. He graduated from Aquinas High School. Following high school Chuck attended St. John’s Univeristy in Minnesota. Upon graduation Chuck moved to San Diego, CA and worked as a foreman on a large construction project. It was his time working with men who had just been released from the California prison system that convinced him to pursue law school. Chuck attended St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis. Following his first year at St. Thomas, he was married to his wife, Polly. After graduation Chuck was hired by Catholic Charities in La Crosse and started the immigration program there. He worked for Catholic Charities for nearly a decade and in addition to building the immigration program, he assisted in the creation of the Warming Center in La Crosse and Wausau and Sojourner House in Eau Claire. Since 2018 Chuck has been working at Pittman & Pittman focused almost entirely on immigration law. His caseload centers on family-based immigration (fiancée petitions, Green Cards for spouses, etc.), naturalization cases and some employment-based work, mostly focused on religious worker visas. Chuck has three children, 8 chickens and has had a beard for over 20 years.

As we mark another Earth Day, Beth brings her presentation ”Bridging the Gap: Neighbors, Plans, and the La Crosse We’re Building Together” – an honest faith-rooted conversation born from her own curiosity and concern. Beth has been exploring how our city and county are preparing for extreme weather and climate change from formal climate action plans to the exciting possibility of resilience hubs: schools, libraries, and community spaces designed to shelter, power, and support neighborhoods when planetary health is imbalanced. We have professionals working towards this, but somewhere between City Hall and our kitchen tables, our houses of worship and our block associations, the information isn’t reaching us. We are the everyday people who will actually show up for each other when things get hard.Beth is not an expert with all the answers, She’s here as a neighbor asking out loud: What do we know? What don’t we know? And what could be built together if we started closing that gap right now? Beth believes the most important thing we can do ahead of the next storm and as part of our children’s future, is to start talking – with each other and with the people already working on our behalf.

Beth Piggush is a La Crosse based climate justice organizer, sustainability educator, and consultant whose work sits at the intersection of community resilience, ecological stewardship and faith-rooted action. As founder of GreenR Community Connections, she supports municipal climate action planning across the Driftless region, lectures in Environmental Studies at UWL, and draws on her background as the former Integral Ecology Director for the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. She is active in the community, supported by her husband and three daughters. She is also the newly elected LaCrosse County Board Supervisor for District 7 in the city.

Insects surround us. They fuel life on Earth through their roles as pollinators, predators, and prey, but rarely do we consider the outsize influence they have had on our culture and civilization. Their anatomy and habits inform how we live, work, create art, and innovate. Our world would look very different without insects, not just because they are crucial to our ecosystems, but because they have shaped and inspired so many aspects of what makes us human.

Barrett Klein investigates mysteries of sleep in societies of insects, creates entomo-art, and is ever on the search for curious connections that bind our lives with our six-legged allies. Barrett studied entomology at Cornell University and the University of Arizona, fabricated natural history exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History, worked with honey bees for his PhD at the University of Texas at Austin, and spearheaded the Pupating Lab at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. He celebrates biodiversity and the intersection of science and art and believes fully that embracing the beauty of insects can transform our lives and our world.
