February 1, 2026 Service at La Conner UMC
We invite all to join us in person or in spirit as we welcome Pastor Cheryl Fear who will be our guest pastor for this Sunday and next. In today’s readings a voice from the Old Testament and a teaching by Jesus tell us what is good. Do justice, love kindness, walk humbly with God. Justice is kindness, and humility before God is justice, and kindness is to see the God in each one and to walk alongside.

God of glory, your splendor shines from a manger in Bethlehem, where the Light of the world is humbly borninto the darkness of human night.Open our eyes to Christ’s presence in the shadows of our world,so that we, like him, may become beacons of your justice, and defenders of all for whom there is no room. Amen.

“Nearby shepherds were living in the fields… Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared… ‘Don’t be afraid! Look! I bring good news to you—wonderful, joyous news for all people! Your savior is born today in David’s city. He is Christ the Lord…’” - Luke 2:8-14

The long wait was over. Hope wasn’t dead—Hope was crying in a manger. Tonight, whatever you’re carrying, the angels are still singing the same message: He came.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that the night is almost over and the Light has come. Fill every tired, hurting, waiting heart with real hope tonight. We’re ready to run to You like those shepherds did. Come meet us right where we are.

A voice is crying out: “Clear the LORD’s way in the desert! Make a level highway in the wilderness for our God! Every valley will be raised up, and every mountain and hill will be flattened. Uneven ground will become level, and rough terrain a valley plain. The LORD’s glory will appear, and all humanity will see it together…”

These are the exact words John shouted. Valleys of discouragement get filled, mountains of pride get flattened, and suddenly everyone sees God’s glory. That roadwork starts inside us this week.

Prayer: Lord, You know every low place where I feel empty and every high place where I’m still proud. Send Your bulldozers this week—raise what’s low, knock down what’s proud, and make a straight road so Your glory can roll right in Sunday morning.

Jesus spoke again: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me won’t walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” --John 8:12

Jesus doesn’t just give us a flashlight— He is the flashlight. Following Him means we stop stumbling over the same junk and start walking in daylight. This week is practice time for keeping in step with the Light.

Prayer: Jesus, I choose to follow You today—no wandering off into the shadows.

John 1:9-11 - “The true light that shines on all people was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and his own people didn’t welcome him.”

The Creator showed up in person and most people were too busy or too proud to notice. Let’s not repeat that mistake this Christmas. Recognizing and welcoming Jesus is the whole point of these next few days.

Prayer: Jesus, open my eyes. I don’t want to miss You this week.

A verse for Advent from Isaiah 9:2:

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; those dwelling in a land of deep darkness—light has shone on them.”

Israel was exhausted— invaded, hopeless, living under foreign kings— when God promised a light was coming. That promise landed in a feeding trough outside Bethlehem. Whatever feels like “deep darkness” for you right now, the same light is headed your way.

Prayer: Lord, I’m tired of the dark. Shine on me this week like You promised.

Matthew 5:1-11:

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he began to speak and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you."
