The point is that Jonah deserved judgment for disobeying God, but instead of immediate destruction (“a shark”), God provided a great fish (“a whale”) that both preserved his life and became the means of bringing him to repentance.

“Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.” — Jonah 1:17 (KJV)

“For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” — Matthew 12:40 (KJV)

The message behind the quote is sound: God’s mercy often comes in unexpected forms. What felt like Jonah’s punishment was actually God’s provision, preserving his life and giving him another opportunity to obey. Sometimes God’s rescue doesn’t look comfortable—it may even feel like confinement—but it is still mercy.
