A Squire is a member of one of more than 4,000 "circles" located throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Philippines, Caribbean, and other places where Knights of Columbus councils are located. The founder of the Columbian Squires, Brother Barnabas McDonald, who on August 4, 1925, Brooklyn NY, established the significance and requirements for being a Columbian Squire. Although the Knights of Columbus councils in Brooklyn, NY. were then involved in the Boy Scouts of America, it was decided by the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus to establish a youth section which became The Columbian Squires within the Order of the Knights of Columbus. A historical and traditional Squire by definition is a young nobleman acting as an attendant to a knight before becoming a knight himself. The Squire (Latin) motto is, "Esto Dignus", meaning "Be Worthy." Columbian Squires are from the ages of ten to eighteen years old (or until the end if his high school senior year). Prior to being a Squire, the candidate must have completed three of the seven sacraments. The three sacraments are Baptism, Reconciliation and first Holy Communion. Once a Squire, he is encouraged to complete his sacrament of, “Confirmation” before the age of eighteen. If the Squire has completed all four sacraments, at the age of eighteen, he can join the Knights of Columbus.
