Ola'a First Hawaiian Congregational Church

Ola'a First Hawaiian Congregational Church E hele mai! Join us for worship during our Sunday service at 10:00am Soon the church embraced an ethnically diverse plantation community.

Olaʻa Church is located in the sacred Olaʻa forest, an area which was restricted to only the families of bird-catchers untill the abolishment of the kapu system in 1819 and the arrival of the first missionary company in 1820. The residents occupation had been to collect feathers for the aliʻi to use for capes and helmets. The church was established in 1835 as a mission outpost to minister to Native Hawaiians living in the area. Olaʻa saw the arrival of immigrant workers as Hawaiʻi Island developed small coffee farms, and sugar plantations were established in the 1890ʻs.
