Have you ever heard how you can catch a monkey? The story shares with us that monkey will never let go of something they want even if it means losing their freedom. Those seeking to catch a money will take a coconut and make a hole in one end just big enough for a monkey’s paw to slip through. Then they drop a pebble into the hole and wait in the bushes with a net. Sooner or later the monkey will come along, pick up that coconut shell, rattle it and peer inside. Once the monkey has determined there is a prize, it will slip its paw into the hole and feel around until it gets ahold of that pebble. But when it tries to bring it out, it finds that it cannot get the paw through the hole without letting go. Unfortunately, that monkey will never let go of what it thinks is a prize.

Sadly, many people today walk through life and act just like that monkey. Although they can have freedom in Christ, they grab hold of the things in this world. They are deceived into thinking that freedom will come when they climb the corporate ladder, have more money, own a particular house, or drive a particular car. Although these things are not bad in themselves they can become a stumbling block that restricts our freedom in Christ if they become our central focus. Are you holding onto something that is keeping you from experiencing freedom true freedom? If so, perhaps it is time to let go and give God control.

If you have been around church long enough you have likely heard the call to be prepared for the Lord’s return that can occur at any time. This call isn’t new as it has been clearly outlined within God’s Word and taken seriously since Jesus’ departure. In fact one could argue that this call does develop a sense of anticipation and excitement as His return will come in the twinkling of an eye. Although many long for His arrival and proclaim, “Come, Lord Jesus” others can become paralyzed at the thought of not knowing when He will return. That being said, there is no need to live in fear or wonder because Jesus outlines to us what to expect. In Matthew 24:3-14, Jesus shares with us what the signs of the times and the end of the age is going to look like. This becomes an indicator of what to look for. In reading these verses we really come to understand that things are going to get worse before they get better. We will see increased deception as many will come in the name of Jesus saying ‘I am the Christ’ and you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. But Jesus tells us, “these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet”. There will be famines, pestilence, and earthquakes in various places which are all indicators of the beginning of sorrows. Within the end of the age, we can expect to see believers experience trials, tribulations, offenses, betrayals, hatred, deception by false prophets, and love that has grown cold.

This description does not sound too encouraging nor does it sound like something to look forward to but there is hope for those who endure! Jesus says, “he who endures to the end shall be saved”. Until this time comes, you and I have an opportunity to prepare. Let us prepare each day by putting on the armor of God (Ephesians. 6:10-20), let us run our race with endurance (Hebrews 12:1-2) and let us press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14). When we choose to walk the narrow path and obey His commandments in our life, one day we will have the opportunity to hear Him say, “well done my good and faithful servant”. Until that day comes, let us be about our Fathers business and walk in obedience in the big and small things throughout our lives.

Any parent who has ever raised a child quickly understands how easy it is to live a life of hypocrisy. Kids mirror their influences and become a sponge that absorb everything around them. As adults we can do things that we have no business doing and then proclaim to our children, “do as I say, not as I do”. This statement alone screams “HYPOCRISY!” because there is an expectation for others to live to a standard that we are not willing to live to ourselves.

In Matthew 23:1-12, Jesus highlights the hypocrisy of the religious leaders. Although these men sat on Moses’ seat telling others how to observe and live according to God’s standards, they failed to live up to the same standards in their own life. One could argue they proclaimed, “do as I say, not as I do” because Jesus went as far as saying “whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their words; for they say, and do not do.” A lot of what they did was to be seen by others. They made their phylacteries broad and enlarged the borders of their garments. They loved the best places at the feast, best seats in the synagogue, greetings in the marketplace, and to be given specific titles. They longed to be the greatest and yet they failed to live up to the standards they imposed upon others. Therefore, let us live our lives in such a way that our speech aligns with our actions otherwise we may find ourselves in danger of hypocritical living as well.

In the final days of Jesus’ life, the religious leaders were bent on questioning Him in order to trap Him with difficult questions. Each interaction brought about questions that would have challenged you and I but Jesus took it in stride. First, the Sadducees question Jesus about the resurrection as they brought a hypothetical question of whose wife a woman would be if she had seven husbands. Jesus responded and communicated that they were mistaken and did not know the scriptures nor the power of God. In the resurrection, you and I will not be given into marriage, rather we will be like the angels of God. Then the Pharisees began to question Jesus about the law as they asked Him, “which is the great commandment in the law?” In response, Jesus highlights that the first and great commandment is to love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind and the second is like it, “you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The call to love is simple to understand but at times in our lives it can become difficult to practice. Far too often Christians and churches can become known as being unloving, judgmental, and hypocritical but these are qualities that we should not allow ourselves to develop. Instead, let us learn what it means to die to self, take up our cross and follow Jesus as we love God and others unconditionally and sacrificially. Let us be men and women who allow our love to become the motivating factor that enables others to know that we are His disciples.

In Matthew 21:33-46 Jesus shares a story to the religious leaders of a landowner who planted a vineyard put in the work to set a hedge around it, dug a winepress and build a tower. When vintage time drew near, He sent His servants to the vinedressers to receive its fruit but the vinedressers beat one, killed one, and stoned another. When he sent more, they did likewise to them. At last, the landowner sends his only son with the belief that they would respect him but even at that, they took him and cast him out of the vineyard before killing him. At the end of the story, Jesus asks, “When the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?”

Jesus shares this story to explain how His own people had been treating God, His prophets, His servants, and eventually His Son. Unfortunately, they failed to see this comparison. Just like King David in 2 Samuel 12, the religious leaders responded by saying, “He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their season”. Just like these religious leaders, we can find ourselves identifying the errors of others while being blinded to our own faults. Instead, lets be people who cry out, “search me oh God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”. Jesus desires to be the chief cornerstone that we build our lives upon. Let us be people who accept and receive from Him with open arms.
