The bishop is at St George's tomorrow! This photo of the chapel at St Benedict's Abbey, which Bishop Morales founded, reflects the warmth and devotion that we hope to emulate at St George's.

Bishop Morales will be at St George's this Sunday (June 14), for our 10:00 AM liturgy. He is not only a bishop, but a Benedictine monk and abbot. One characteristic of the Benedictine tradition that Bishop Morales shows so well is that of hospitality, especially in his cooking! The bishop loves to cook and has many time cooked his family's dishes throughout the diocese (Fr Jason can attest that they are delicious!). The Rule of St Benedict says, "All who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ." The Benedictine Rule is not only the standard for monastic life, but offers much to guide a congregation in living with Christ as the center.

Meet our bishop this Sunday, June 14, at our 10 AM service! All week we have been sharing stories about Bp Alberto Morales, and today's is not usually associated with Anglicans: he's a big fan of Southern Gospel music! Growing up in Puerto Rico, the bishop tells about going to the Roman Catholic church on Sunday mornings and then in the evening attending Evangelical churches, and that combination gave him a deep appreciation for both approaches to the Christian life.

Bishop Morales will be with us this Sunday (June 14) for our 10 AM service! Bp Morales grew up in Puerto Rico, where he founded St Benedict's Abbey in 1985. The Abbey, with Bp Morales as its abbot, moved to its current home in Bartonville, Illinois (see Tuesday's post about the Abbey) in 1996, at the invitation of Bishop Keith Ackerman of the Diocese of Quincy. One of Fr Jason's favorite stories that Bp Morales tells is when St Benedict's Abbey first moved to Illinois, they went to a bank to open accounts and the bank representative helping them wanted to know how much money they had "in Puerto Rico dollars," apparently not knowing that Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States. Bp Morales asked for a US dollar bill, showed it to the bank employee, and said, "This is a Puerto Rican dollar!"

Come to St George's this Sunday, June 14, to meet our bishop, The Rt Rev. J. Alberto Morales, O.S.B. The "O.S.B." stands for "Order of St Benedict." As many bishops of the ancient and medieval world, our bishop is a monk, the founding abbot of St Benedict's Abbey in Bartonville, Illinois, where the Abbey does significant work in caring for the needy and in ecumenical endeavors. The Abbey has a strong influence throughout the diocese in the Benedictine motto: Ora at Labora, Latin for "Pray and Work." While the Abbey has a handful of professed religious (the broad term for monks and nuns) there are also a number of Oblates of St Benedict's Abbey, individuals who take on vows within the Benedictine Rule while continuing to live and work in the world.

Come meet an Anglican bishop this Sunday (June 14) at St George's! Bishop J. Alberto Morales, O.S.B., became the 9th bishop of the Diocese of Quincy in 2010, serving congregations throughout the United States and overseas.

Check in every day this week to learn something new about our bishop! Here is a clip of Bishop Morales preaching during a recent visitation in a parish in Florida.

A blessed feast day of our patron saint, the martyr St George!

God of hosts,
who so kindled the flame of love
in the heart of your servant George
that he bore witness to the risen Lord
by his life and by his death:
give us the same faith and power of love
that we who rejoice in his triumphs
may come to share with him the fullness of the resurrection;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
