The History -
By Every Word Ministries was founded by Jarrod Robert Mosley as a small home Bible study. It was shortly after that we went virtual as a Facebook group on January 30, 2005.
The name of this ministry comes from the words of Jesus in Matthew 4:4 King James Version, which says:
But he answered and said, {It is written man shall not live by bread alone, but [by every word] that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.}
Introduction:
The War Of Life Bible Study, originally titled: The Battle Of Life is our first official Bible Study launched by and for By Every Word Ministries.
The name and idea came from a study in the Thompson-Chain Reference Bible 5th Improved Edition Compiled and Edited by Frank Charles Thompson, D.D., PHD. Published by B.B.Kirkbridge Company. Copyright ©️ 2007 as titled The Battle Of Life (study numbers 357-363 pages 1368-1369).
This study is meant to view life from the view that our lives are at war.
THAT'S BECAUSE IT IS!
LESSON ONE:
THE SELF WARS
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, bringing me into captivity to the law of sin, which is in my members.
- Romans 7:23
The war of life we face is the self wars. It's a war that we can see, hear, taste and touch. The Bible calls this "the flesh". So, really this lesson could be titled: The Flesh Wars.
2 Corinthians 10:3
For though we walk in [the flesh], we do not war after [the flesh]:
James 4:1
From whence come [wars] and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that [war] in your members?
2 Peter 2:10
But chiefly them that walk after [the flesh] in the lust of uncleanness, and desire government. Presumtious are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
If we're going to compare our lives to a war we at least have and contend with one enemy. It would also mean that we are not alone and we are in an army.
Maybe this is why there is a Sunday School song that proudly declares “I’m In The Lord's Army!“- (written and published by the Cedarmont Kids copyright ©️ 1995.)?
If you've decided to follow Jesus; then you've already started the basics and have been recruited, inducted and “sworn in". So, let's skip any further introductions and formalities to get straight to the point.
In our first lesson we will cover three main points:
1. The five basic principles that you are required to have in the Lord's army in which we will call Your Marching Orders.
2. The Two Paths of Life you can choose from that God has put in our war that will help determine if we are a good soldier or not: The Path Of Selfishness and The Path Of Selflessness.
3. Finally, we sum it up with the Reason for EVERYTHING!
If it's true that we are in an army, it make each and every one of us a soldier!
We're chosen to be a soldier:
2 Timothy 2:4
4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that we may please him who hath [chosen] him [to be a soldier].
Who chose us? Jesus Christ, our captain of salvation:
Hebrews 2:10
10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory: to make the [captain of] their [salvation] perfect through sufferings.
Your Marching Orders
These five basic principles that you are required to have in the Lord's army in which we will call Your Marching Orders. Here each order will be defined, given a few words, and given Biblical scripture(s) to reference it.
1.Obedience
2.Faith
3.Consecration
4.Humility
5.Truth
1. Obedience:
The act or practice of obeying; dutiful submissive compliance.
- dictionary.com
A good soldier will learn to obey his/her leader(s). Our leaders are appointed by God or by men and women anointed by God to bestow leadership. These are at first our parents or guardians; but then teachers, pastors, etc.
God has even appointed other people in this world that we have to obey like police officers, judges, bosses, etc.
Obedience is better than sacrifice:
I Samuel 15:22
22 And Samuel said, hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold to [obey is better than sacrifice], and to hearken than the fat of rams.
Obey with all your heart:
Deuteronomy 26:16
16 This day the Lord thy God hath commanded thee to do all thy statutes and judgements; therefore keep and do them [with all thine heart], and soul.
Obedience is wise:
Matthew 7:24
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him a [wise] man which buildeth his house upon a rock:
Obedience is not just saying you will, it also means you do:
Matthew 7:21
21 Not everyone that [saith] unto me, Lord, Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he that [doeth] the will of my father which is in heaven.
The Opposite of obedience is disobedience and it is often associated with as rebellion. Which can cost a great price. In 1 Samuel 15:23, Samuel; a great judge, prophet and teacher told his student King Saul:
23 For [rebellion] is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath rejected thee from being king.
Saul would continue to defy Samuel that it caused him and his family to die horrible deaths, even after Samuel rebuked him.
Other scriptures on obedience:
Isaiah 1:19
19 If ye be willing and [obedient], ye shall eat the good of the land:
Romans 6:16
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to [obey], his servants ye are to whom ye [obey]: whether of sin unto death, or [obedience] unto righteousness.
Ephesians 6:5
5 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
2. Faith
Firm belief in something for which there is no proof,
- mirriamwebster.com
Believing or trusting (more than just being confident) in your leaders can teach you how to lead also.
It's impossible to please God without faith:
Hebrews 11:6
6 But [without faith it is impossible to please] him, for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Great faith is marveled:
Matthew 8:10
10 When Jesus heard it, he [marveled], and said unto them that followed, verily I say unto you, I have not found so [great faith], no not in Israel.
If we ask, we shall receive:
Matthew 7:7
7 [Ask, and it shall be given] you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
Faith can also mean trust.
Proverbs 3:5
5 [Trust] in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine understanding;
Psalm 37:3
3 [Trust] in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
Unbelief is the opposite of faith. Unbelief hinders the work of God.
Matthew 13:58
58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their [unbelief].
Other faith scriptures:
Genesis 22:2-3
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham, rose up early in the morning, and sattled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place God had told him.
Abraham obeyed and several scriptures declare that he trusted God! So much so that he is referred to as the Father of Our Faith.
3. Consecration
The act of consecrating; dedication to the service and worship of a deity.
- thefreedictionary.com
Note: Since there is but ONE GOD, this is definitely easier!
Consecration is the free will submission to Jesus Christ. It also can be used to describe what His Apostles did to serve God and how every Christian should live!
With consecration can come blessing:
Exodus 32:29
29 [Consecrate] yourselves to day to the Lord, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother, that he [may bestow upon] you [a blessing] this day.
Consecration is part of your service:
Romans 12:1
1 I beseech you brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable, unto God, which is your reasonable [service].
Other consecration scriptures:
Judges 5:2
2 Praise ye the Lord for the avenging of Israel, when the people [willingly offered themselves].
1 Chronicles 29:5
5 The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to [consecrate] his service this day unto the Lord?
Philippians 3:7-8
7 But what things were [gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ].
8 Yea doubtless, and I [count all things loss] for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I suffered the [loss of all things, and do count] them but dung, that I may win Christ.
4. Humility
The quality or state of thinking others are better than you. The quality or state of being humble.
- mirriamwebster.com
Humility to your leaders can lead to advancement in respect and authority.
The humble are called the greatest in heaven:
Matthew 18:4
4 Whosoever therefore shall [humble] himself as this little child, the same is [the greatest in] the kingdom of [heaven].
Humility can cause prayers to be answered:
2 Chronicles 7:14
14 If my people who are called by my name shall [humble] themselves, and [pray], and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and [forgive their sins, and will heal their land].
Pride opposes humility.
When pride comes, so does shame:
Proverbs 11: 2
2 When [pride commeth, commeth shame], but with the lowly is wisdom.
Pride comes before destruction:
Proverbs 16:8
8 [Pride goeth before destruction], and a haughty spirit before a fall.
5. Truth
That which is true in accordance with fact or reality.
- oxforddictionaries.com
Truth and Trust go hand-in-hand.
You are to speak the truth:
Zechariah 8:16
16 These are the things that ye shall do, [speak] ye every man the [truth] to his neighbour, execute judgement, and peace in your gates.
Ephesians 4:25
25 Wherefore putting away lying, [speak] every man [truth]: for we are members one of another.
Lying opposes truth.
Lies weary you:
Jeremiah 9:5
5 And they will decieve everyone his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongues to speak [lies], and [weary] themselves to commit iniquity.
Lying is an abomination:
Proverbs 12:22
22 [Lying] lips are [an abomination] to the Lord; but they that deal truly are his delight.
Another scripture on truth:
Proverbs 12:19
19 The lip of [truth] shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Now that you have your marching orders, you have two paths to choose from in this life:
The Two Paths Of Life
The decisions we make in life lead down two paths which are set before us. The Path of Selfishness and The Path of Selflessness.
Matthew 7:13-14
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
1. The Path Of Selfishness
Concerned chiefly or excessively with oneself, and having little regard for others.
- thefreedictionary.com
Selfishness often becomes sinful. Jesus spoke of a man who was captured, beaten, robbed and left for dead. He tells of three men who happened by him. The first two men that passed by were selfish people.
Luke 10:30-32
30 And Jesus said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
Selfish people are right in their own eyes:
Proverbs 12:15
15 They way of a fool is [right in] his [own eyes]: but he that hearkeneth unto council is wise.
Selfish people are pure in their own eyes:
Proverbs 30:12
12 There is a generation that [are pure in their own eyes], and yet is not washed in their filthiness.
Other scriptures on selfishness:
Proverbs 17:9
9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter seperateth very friends.
Proverbs 21:17
17 He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.
Luke 8:14
14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
2. The Path Of Selflessness
When a person cares enough to take a risk on their own gain to do, give, or say something for another person. Without expecting a token in return for the deed, act, or accomplishment made from it.
- urbandictionary.com
Continuing the story of the man that got captured, beaten, robbed and left for dead. One man of the three stepped in and saved this man's life.
Luke 10:33-36
33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
36 Which of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among thieves?
The Path Of Selflessness maybe hard to go down or to take on, but in reality it's the only path to heaven.
Selflessness is required to be a disciple:
Matthew 16:24
24 Then Jesus said unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, [let] him [deny] himself, and [take up] his [cross, and follow me].
Luke 14:27
27 [And whosoever doth not bear] his [cross, and come after me, can not be my disciple].
Selflessness includes watching someone else's things:
Philippians 2:4
4 [Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others].
Selflessness includes taking care of your enemies:
Romans 12:20
20 [Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed] him; [if] he [thirst, give] him [drink]: for in so doing thou shalt reap coals of fire on his head.
Selflessness will cause the devil to flee:
James 4:7
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist [the devil] and he [will flee] from you.
Other selflessness scriptures:
Romans 15:1
1 We then who are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not please ourselves.
Galatians 5:24
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
1 Thessalonians 5:15
15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
The Reason For EVERYTHING!
16 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. - Psalm 16:11
The Self Wars boils down to the reason for it all. Really it's he reason everything exists. We could reflect many ideas, theories, commentaries, etc. from the most well known, famous, wise, etc. people in the world. But, all we're going to leave you is four scriptures which might answer this for you.
1. 1 Thessalonians 4:3
3 For this is [the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication];
2. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
18 [In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you].
3. 1 Peter 2:15-16
15 For so is [the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men]:
16 [As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God
All of this to say our existence stems from God’s will. Which is the reason we live, breath, and should live for!
