Every team starts the season talking about unity. But eventually, almost every team faces the same threats:
Comparison.
Pride.
Miscommunication.
Selfishness.
Division.
That’s why 1 Corinthians is surprisingly relevant for athletes and coaches. Paul wrote to a divided group of believers who had lost sight of their mission. And in the middle of the conflict, he gave four timeless lessons about what creates true unity.
One Team. One God. Many Gifts:
Every athlete brings something valuable to the team. Talent was never meant to elevate ourselves above others—it was given to serve the whole.
One Body. Many Members:
The most visible players are not the only valuable ones. Great teams honor every role, including the unseen ones.
Love > Personal Achievement:
You can win awards, break records, and accomplish incredible things…but without love, it means very little.
Love Like This:
“Love is patient, love is kind…” (1 Corinthians 13)
The kind of love Paul describes builds cultures where teammates feel valued, encouraged, forgiven, and united around something bigger than themselves.
The best teams aren’t just talented. They’re filled with people willing to lay down pride for the sake of each other.
That kind of unity changes everything.
