Heifer International is a nonprofit, humanitarian organization dedicated to ending hunger and poverty and caring for the Earth. Heifer currently provides livestock, trees, seeds and training in environmentally sound agriculture to families in 19 countries, including the United States. Since 1944, they have helped more than 32.3 million families in more than 125 countries. They aim to end hunger and poverty for millions of families in the communities where they work.
Heifer International was founded in 1944 by a Church of the Brethren relief worker, Dan West. He sought a better way to eliminate hunger after becoming unsatisfied with the temporary nature of relief aid. When he returned home to Indiana, he shared with his neighbors and many congregations his idea of donating young heifers to families in need as a way to achieve self-reliance. His phrase “not a cup of milk, but a cow” became the motto for Heifer International.
