I want to be transparent that this page is in a period of rethinking some of its core assumptions about Sabbath theology in Islam.

I’m re-examining how “sacred time” works across the Qur’an and earlier Abrahamic tradition, and I don’t think the picture is as simple as I once assumed.

The Qur’an speaks of the Sabbath as a serious covenant for the Children of Israel, while Islamic practice centers weekly worship on Jumu‘ah (Friday prayer), with its own distinct role.

But the question I keep coming back to is this:
Is the Sabbath purely a past legal command for one community—or does it reflect something deeper about how God structures sacred time across revelation?

There are sincere voices on different sides of this—some seeing it as fully abrogated in legal force, while others see it as spiritually ongoing in some form. I’m not interested in flattening that disagreement.

On this Hanukkah, our thoughts are with those impacted by the horrific anti-semitic attack that took place in Australia earlier today. Our hearts go out to the 11 souls lost, the 29 people wounded, including Ahmed al Ahmed the bystander who disarmed one of the shooters, the Jewish community of Australia, and to our Jewish siblings around the world.

We are heartbroken that this day of light and peace became one of darkness and violence for so many.

Today we mark the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief, a solemn day that begs us to remember that intolerance and hate have devastating and violent consequences.

Tolerance must be the hallmark of all religious practices if we are to live in harmony as God intended for us.
