Today the world marks the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief, commemorating acts of violence targeting individuals based on their religion or belief.

This day is for remembrance and to honor these individuals but it is also a day to condemn any violence on the basis of or in the name of religion of belief. Not only is this violence it a violation of an individual’s basic freedom, it is a gross disparagement of religious teachings, like the Qur’an verse we’ve shared here, which remind us of the truth - difference and diversity is one of the countless examples of divine beauty on earth. To harm another in the name of religion is to malign religious teachings.

In the face of religious extremism, a normalization of far right ideologies, and the seeping of fascism into institutions across the world, it is the responsibility of all believers to remind the world of the beauty in religious teachings.

I want to be transparent that this page is in a period of rethinking some of its core assumptions about Sabbath theology in Islam.

I’m re-examining how “sacred time” works across the Qur’an and earlier Abrahamic tradition, and I don’t think the picture is as simple as I once assumed.

The Qur’an speaks of the Sabbath as a serious covenant for the Children of Israel, while Islamic practice centers weekly worship on Jumu‘ah (Friday prayer), with its own distinct role.

But the question I keep coming back to is this:
Is the Sabbath purely a past legal command for one community—or does it reflect something deeper about how God structures sacred time across revelation?

There are sincere voices on different sides of this—some seeing it as fully abrogated in legal force, while others see it as spiritually ongoing in some form. I’m not interested in flattening that disagreement.
