As we enter into June, may we be reminded of God's love for all of us, and to bring in the Kingdom of God, we must reflect that love to each other, as we are all made in His image; Christ can be found in each of us 🌈 All are blessed, all are beloved, and all are welcome at St. James!

We have been monitoring the weather, and it looks like the rain will be continuing throughout the evening. While we are thankful for the much-needed rains that quench the thirsty soil, we are sad to say that we are going to postpone our Pentecost Eve Bonfire to a later date this summer. Stay tuned for when that will be rescheduled for. Our Labyrinth will still be open until 2pm today, we look forward to gathering with friends to celebrate the life of Susan Driskell this afternoon, and we look forward to celebrating Pentecost with y'all tomorrow during service!

The Labyrinth will be open this Saturday, May 23rd, from 10am-2pm. In a time where the world feels fast and hard to keep up with, this meditative practice offers a chance for us to slow down and catch our breath. Drop in anytime.

THE FEAST OF THE ASCENSION

Acts 1:8a. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.

After his resurrection, Jesus appears often to the disciples during the forty days before his ascension, which we mark today. He speaks about the kingdom of God, equipping them for the future and assuring them that they will receive power. Lest they forget, as they are gazing to heaven as Jesus is ascending, two strangers appear and remind the disciples of Jesus’s promise that he will be with them.

So much of our lives is between the past and the promised future. And it’s in these in-between times where our faith often grows. We do what we are called to do and then wait to see God’s response. The longer we are alive, the more we experience these in-between times. For me, it was waiting to adopt two children. It was waiting to see if the bishop would make me a candidate for Holy Orders. It was sitting with my father in intensive care, waiting to see if he would live. It was wondering what to do when I resigned as the bishop of Western North Carolina.

At some point, we learn to accept this pattern of waiting for God. This acceptance not only diminishes our anxiety, but it can also greatly deepen our faith.

"The actions of our elected representatives confront us with the question of whether fidelity to partisan politics promotes God’s mission on earth. Does our adherence to partisanship take precedence over the promises contained in our baptismal covenant to strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being? As disciples of Jesus, we are called to transcend partisan politics as we seek to embrace God’s vision for our common life. To creatively imagine what might be possible if prioritizing political advantage was secondary to seeking and serving Christ in all persons. This is the work God invites us to do."
