This Sunday, Rev. Mark Curtis preached "Hoping Toward Hope" from Psalm 130, Lamentations 3:21–26, and Romans 5:1–5, exploring what it means to hold onto hope when life feels uncertain, painful, or overwhelming.

Drawing on Paul's words in Romans and stories shared from the Montreat Youth Conference, Mark reminded us that hope is not the absence of suffering but the assurance that God is present within it. The road to hope often winds through suffering, endurance, and character, shaping us in ways we may not fully understand at the time.

The sermon acknowledged the realities of suffering in our world and in our own lives, from heartbreak and illness to violence, addiction, and loss. Yet the Christian faith offers a promise deeper than comfort: God's love remains steadfast even when life is at its hardest.

As Mark reminded us, God is not primarily in the business of making us comfortable or pain-free. God is in the business of resurrection. The good news of the gospel is that when we feel as though we are falling, we can never fall farther than God can reach.

"Suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us." (Romans 5:3–5)

🌿📚Reminder: Summer Sunday School Continues This Sunday!

Join us this Sunday at 9:45 am in the James Park Room as we continue The Corinthians Conversation with Dr. Elizabeth "Ebby" Arnold, Scholar in Residence at The Candler Foundry.

Together, we're exploring Paul's letters to the church in Corinth and discovering what they can teach us about faith, community, and following Christ in today's world.

You can join us in person or by Zoom. Whether you were with us last week or are jumping in for the first time, we'd love to have you with us!

As Scott Scheetz practiced "Great Is Our God" in the Sanctuary this week, the music filled the church with beauty, joy, and a sense of God's presence. For a few minutes, the worries and distractions of the day seemed to fade as the melody drew our attention to the goodness and faithfulness of God.

What a gift it was to hear those beautiful notes echo through the Sanctuary and be reminded that worship is not reserved for Sunday mornings. Even in the middle of an ordinary week, God's presence meets us in unexpected ways, lifting our hearts and inviting us to see the world with a little more wonder and gratitude.

🏠❤️ Family Promise Host Week Begins This Sunday!

This upcoming week, we're honored to welcome families from Family Promise of Knoxville to First Presbyterian.

Family Promise comes alongside families experiencing housing instability, helping them move toward stable housing through temporary shelter, case management, and ongoing support. During our host week, we have the opportunity to offer something simple but powerful: a safe place to stay and a community that cares.

We're especially grateful for the many First Presbyterian volunteers and partner organizations who make this ministry possible through meals, hospitality, conversation, and encouragement.

As these families spend the week with us, we invite you to keep them in your prayers. We can pray for hope and encouragement during a season of transition, for stability and new opportunities in the days ahead, and for powerful connections between our volunteers and the families staying with us.

Thank you for helping us be a church that puts faith into action. :)

🌳☀️ Outdoor Worship & Church Picnic | Sunday, June 21

Our annual church picnic is coming up, and we hope you'll join us at Victor Ashe Park on Sunday, June 21 at 11:00 a.m!

One of the things that makes this Sunday fun is the opportunity to get out of the church building and worship together outdoors. It's a nice change of pace and a chance to experience worship in a different setting while enjoying time together as a church family.

After the service, we'll share a picnic lunch and enjoy good food and our picnic potluck. Whether you've been at First Presbyterian for years or are newer to the congregation, it's a great opportunity to connect with others and spend time together!

Please bring a lawn chair and a dish to share:
Last names A–L: Side dish
Last names M–Z: Dessert

The church will provide fried chicken, water, tea, lemonade, plates, and utensils.

We'll gather under the covered pavilion, so come dressed for the weather. Please note that there will be no services, classes, childcare, or livestream at the church building that day, as all worship activities will take place at the park.

We look forward to seeing you there!

🔨 Building Homes, Building Hope: Help Us Prepare for Our 2027 Habitat Build!

As we continue highlighting our wonderful local mission partners, we're featuring Knoxville Habitat for Humanity and inviting First Presbyterian members to put faith into action!

Many in our congregation helped build a home for Dominique and her family in 2024, and it was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable local mission projects we've done. Members of all ages worked side by side, learning new skills, sharing meals, making friends, and experiencing the joy of helping create a safe, stable home for a local family. We were also grateful to partner with our friends at Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan, whose fellowship, generosity, and teamwork made the experience even more special.

As we look ahead to our next church-sponsored Habitat build in 2027, we're beginning to identify volunteers who may be interested in helping lead and coordinate this effort. Whether you're an experienced builder, a gifted organizer, or simply passionate about local missions, we'd love to have you involved.

No construction experience is required, just a willingness to serve, learn, and work alongside others to make a difference in our community.

On Sunday, Senior Pastor Mark Curtis explored the many interruptions found throughout Matthew 9 in his sermon "Life Interrupted" and invited us to consider how God often works through the unexpected disruptions in our lives. In a passage filled with interruptions, Jesus calls Matthew away from his tax booth, responds to questions from the Pharisees, pauses to heal a woman who had suffered for twelve years, and ultimately raises a young girl from the dead.

Mark noted that while we often view interruptions as inconveniences, the Gospels portray them as moments where God’s grace, mercy, and power break into ordinary life. Quoting Henri Nouwen, he reflected that “the interruptions were my work,” suggesting that following Christ may mean remaining open to God’s unexpected movements rather than clinging too tightly to our own plans.

Throughout the sermon, Mark highlighted a common thread connecting Matthew, the hemorrhaging woman, and the synagogue leader’s daughter: each story is a resurrection story. In places marked by hopelessness, isolation, loss, or death, Jesus brings new life. Even the Greek language of the passage points toward resurrection, with words that mean “arise” appearing in both Matthew’s call and the raising of the young girl.

Drawing from Psalm 33, Mark reminded the congregation that while human plans often change, “the counsel of the Lord stands forever.” God continues to interrupt our lives with hope, healing, and new possibilities when we least expect them. The invitation of the Gospel is not to control these moments or predict them, but to remain ready for the surprising ways Christ brings resurrection into the broken and difficult places of our lives.
