St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church We are a Catholic parish in Knoxville, TN, under the auspices of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter.

Our Worship and spirituality preserve the patrimony of the Anglican communion within the Catholic Chuch. We are a parish of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, a group of Roman Catholics in full communion with the pope and the Catholic Church. Our unique identity combines both the Anglican Patrimony with the fullness of the Catholic Church. The Ordinariate received its charter and

mission from Pope Benedict XVI in his apostolic constitution "Anglicanorum coetibus." Our bishop is the Most Reverend Steven Lopes. Blessed Rogation Sunday!
The Minor Rogation Days are once again upon us, these days invite us to walk humbly before the Lord in the days leading up to the Ascension, asking his mercy upon our sins and his blessing upon the work of our hands. In these ancient days of prayer, the Church teaches us to see the fields, gardens, homes, roads, and daily labors of our lives as places that need to be touched by grace.

Traditionally days of Abstinence, the rogation days take on a penitential mood in the midst of the Easter season, much like the tinge of sorrow the apostles must have felt at Christ's words that he would be leaving them. We can observe these days with our families through Prayer, Abstinence and fasting. Singing the litany of the saints, leading mini processions around your property and praying the penitential Psalms are great ways to mark these days this week.

A Prayer for fruitful seasons (from St. Gregory's Prayer Book)

ALMIGHTY God, who hast blessed the earth that it should be fruitful and bring forth whatsoever is needful for the life of man, and hast commanded us to work with quietness, and eat our own bread: bless the labours of the husbandman, and grant such seasonable weather that we may gather in the fruits of the earth, and ever rejoice in thy goodness, to the praise of thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

From the Choir Master
Dear Parish Family,

You may have noticed that we have recently been singing a Responsorial Psalm at Mass rather than the Gradual, we will be doing this going forward outside of the seasons of Advent and Lent. I wanted to say a word about that, since any change in our common worship is worth explaining. This is not something we came up with on our own. Our bishop has explicitly asked us to use the Responsorial Psalm during these seasons, and he has also specifically asked that we sing it using Anglican chant.

That may sound unfamiliar at first, but Anglican chant is a beautiful and fitting part of who we are. As a parish of the Ordinariate, we have received the English patrimony as a gift, and Anglican chant is one of its great treasures. It is a reverent, graceful way of singing the Psalms, one that lets the words of Scripture speak clearly while clothing them in beauty. Far from being something outside Catholic worship, it is part of the patrimony now fully at home in the Catholic Church and in Divine Worship.

My hope is that this will not feel like a performance done for you, but prayer offered with you. The melodic line for the people is printed in the bulletin, and I would be very glad for you to sing it with us. In time, I hope it will become something familiar and loved in our parish life, especially as we begin using Anglican chant more in the Offices and in Choral Evensong as well.

Thank you for singing, praying, and growing with us as we continue to deepen the musical and spiritual life of our parish.

In Christ,
The Choirmaster

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

Lesson: Gn 2:7-9; 3:1-7
Epistle: Rom 5:12-19
GOSPEL: Mt 4:1-11

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,
‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,
‘He will give his angels charge of you,’ and
‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Begone, Satan! for it is written,
‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

The Collect of the Day

O LORD who for our sake didst fast forty days and forty nights: give us grace to use such abstinence, that, our flesh being subdued to the Spirit, we may ever obey thy godly motions in righteousness and true holiness, to thy honour and glory; who livest and reignest with the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen

THE SUNDAY CALLED QUINQUAGESIMA
Lesson: Sir 15:15-20
Epistle: 1 Cor 2:6-10
GOSPEL: Mt 5:17-37

“Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
“You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother[b] shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be liable to the hell[d] of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
“Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

The Collect of the Day

O LORD, who hast taught us that all our doings without charity are nothing worth: send thy Holy Spirit, and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of charity, the very bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whosoever liveth is counted dead before thee; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

THE SUNDAY CALLED SEXAGESIMA
Lesson: Is 58:7-10
Epistle: 1 Cor 2:1-5
GOSPEL: Mt 5:13-16

“You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

COLLECT

O LORD God, who seest that we put not our trust in any thing that we do: mercifully grant that by thy power, we may be defended against all adversity; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
