Mission of Hope

Mission of Hope Mission of Hope is a Christ-centered ministry serving the people, schools and communities of Southern Appalachia.

Many of the people we assist are caught in the pockets of poverty and as a result have lost all hope for their future. With your help and with God’s love we can help bring new hope to many.

"It makes it all worthwhile."

For years, Harold Underwood has watched golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners come together for one purpose: helping children and families across rural Appalachia.

From longtime players who return year after year to faithful sponsors like Chick-fil-A Knoxville and so many other ministry partners, the Mission of Hope Golf Classic is about more than a day on the course. It's about people coming together to make a lasting impact.

Every team, every sponsor, and every participant helps provide food, school supplies, Christmas gifts, scholarships, and hope to communities that need it most.

⛳ Join us on September 17 for the 23rd Annual Mission of Hope Golf Classic at Willow Creek Golf Club.

Whether you're a returning player or joining us for the first time, we'd love to have you on the course with us.

We were blessed to welcome the youth group from Blacksburg United Methodist Church to our warehouse this week as part of their mission trip!

These students jumped right in, helping pack food boxes that will be distributed to families across Appalachia. Their willingness to serve, work hard, and share God's love through action made a real difference.

Every box packed represents hope for a family facing difficult circumstances, and we are grateful for these young people who chose to spend part of their mission trip serving others.

Thank you, Blacksburg UMC Youth Group, for your servant hearts and for helping us extend hope throughout our region. We pray your mission trip continues to be a meaningful and life-changing experience!

⛰🌈 "It's a big need. A lot of people can't afford it. But this right here will help them out and pull them through."

For many families across rural Appalachia, a box of food is more than a meal—it's relief. It's one less burden to carry. It's the reassurance that someone cares.

Through Mission of Hope's outreach events, hundreds of families receive food, household essentials, clothing, and other critical resources each year. These gatherings aren't just about meeting physical needs; they're about reminding people that they haven't been forgotten.

The need is real. But so is the generosity of people who choose to help.

Because of faithful supporters, volunteers, churches, and partners, families throughout Appalachia are finding hope in difficult seasons—and practical help when they need it most.

Thank you for helping us continue this work and for making moments like these possible. ⛰🌈

Last week we had the privilege of welcoming a group of East Tennessee REALTORS® as part of REALTORS® Are Good Neighbors Week. They spent time at Mission of Hope packing and serving with us, and we are so grateful for their hands-on support.

Days like this are a great reminder that when a community comes together, real impact happens. Every box packed and every moment served helps us continue meeting needs for families across Appalachia.

Thank you to everyone who came, worked hard, and brought such a great spirit of service. We appreciate you more than you know!

"Their eyes get so bright and big."

For decades, Steve Jones has watched children walk through the doors of Mission of Hope Christmas parties across rural Appalachia. Some are overwhelmed by the toys. Others are excited to pick out a football, a fishing rod, or a gift for a younger sibling.

But what stands out most isn't what's in their hands—it's the joy on their faces.

Mission of Hope was founded to serve communities that are often overlooked, bringing hope, encouragement, and practical support to families facing significant challenges. Thanks to the generosity of volunteers and supporters, thousands of children experience the love of Christ each Christmas season through gifts, smiles, and caring adults who take the time to know their names.

As Steve shares in this story, there is a reason Mission of Hope continues to serve these communities year after year: the need is real, and every child deserves to know they are seen, valued, and loved.

In 2006, Mission of Hope was one day away from closing on a warehouse that would become the ministry's home for decades to come.

There was just one problem.

They were still tens of thousands of dollars short.

As Executive Director Emeritus Emmette Thompson tells it, Mission of Hope had prayed, fundraised, and shared the vision everywhere they could. By December 31, they had made incredible progress—but there was still a gap.

Then came a trip to the mailbox.

A grant application they had nearly given up on arrived with a check for $52,500—just enough to help make the dream a reality.

"It was the greatest example of JIT, just-in-time, we ever had."

Today, that same building serves as the hub for scholarships, Christmas outreach, school supplies, food distribution, and countless other efforts that impact families across Appalachia.

Sometimes one act of generosity changes far more than a moment. Sometimes it helps build a foundation that serves thousands for years to come.

When Ariel first began her college journey, she wasn’t sure exactly where the road ahead would lead. Through challenges, growth, and God’s faithfulness, she discovered a passion for nursing and a desire to serve others through compassionate care.

Her story is a reminder that hope can change lives — not just for today, but for generations to come. 💙

We are so proud of Ariel and thankful to walk alongside students across Appalachia as they pursue the future God has for them.
