Mission of Hope

Mission of Hope is a Christ-centered ministry serving the people, schools and communities of Southern Appalachia.

Many of the people we assist are caught in the pockets of poverty and as a result have lost all hope for their future. With your help and with God’s love we can help bring new hope to many.

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

In observance of Labor Day, the Mission of Hope office will be closed Monday, September 7.

We are grateful for all those whose hard work and service make a difference in our communities each day. We hope you enjoy a safe and restful holiday weekend!

“It just puts chills in your arms and makes you have a really good feeling that you’re just a little bit of a part that does some good.”

Gary Birchfield came to Yellow Creek School in Middlesboro, Kentucky, with a group from Maryville First Baptist to help with Mission of Hope’s Back to School program. For Gary, it’s the time with the kids that makes days like this so special.

“When they smile at you and give that smile back to you, you can tell that it’s a love thing.”

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering with Mission of Hope, come serve with us. There’s a lot of good to be done across Appalachia, and you may be surprised by how much you get back in return.

It’s official—our Back to School deliveries are complete! 🎒📚

Over the past month, we’ve been blessed to deliver backpacks, school supplies, hygiene bags, and Pledge to Graduate materials to nearly 10,000 students across 29 elementary schools in rural Appalachia.

But these deliveries are about so much more than what’s inside a backpack. They give us the opportunity to walk through the doors of our partner schools, spend time with students and educators, and share encouragement as a new school year begins. Those smiles, conversations, and connections are some of our favorite parts of Back to School!

A huge thank you to everyone who made these deliveries possible—our volunteers, church teams, delivery drivers, donors, school staff, and Mission of Hope team. Each of you played a part in bringing HOPE to students and helping them start their school year off right.

We’re praying for every student and educator we had the privilege of serving. May this be a year filled with learning, growth, and HOPE!

There’s something special about starting a new school year with what you need.

“Everybody’s super excited at the beginning of any school year. And everyone likes to get something new, whether it’s clothes or shoes or supplies. It just makes everyone feel better.”

Barbara Warren, principal at Yellow Creek Elementary School in Middlesboro, Kentucky, sees firsthand what that support means for students, families and teachers. She says the cost of school supplies can be a real financial hardship, and teachers are often spending plenty out of their own pockets, too.

That’s why Mission of Hope is grateful to help make the start of the school year a little easier. When students have what they need, everyone can hit the ground running.

Our friends at Compassion Ministries, Inc. are hosting a Food Giveaway on September 12 in Newport, and they need volunteers to help serve local families!

A blessing that keeps going. 💙

Our volunteers recently delivered a truckload of much-needed food to our ministry friends at Manna House Outreach Center in Tazewell, TN.

This food will continue its journey into the community, helping provide for families and individuals in need.

We’re grateful to support ministries like Manna House Outreach Center Shared Blessings Thrift Store as they serve their community and share hope and love with those around them.

Today’s Back to School delivery was filled with so many special moments! ❤️

We loved spending time with the students, school staff, and our amazing delivery team. These are the moments that make Back to School about so much more than backpacks and supplies.

Thank you for welcoming us into your school and allowing us to be part of your day! We are so grateful for the relationships we’ve built with the schools we serve and for every opportunity to share a little encouragement and Extend Hope to our students and educators.

What a blessing it is to be part of such a special community!

Almost there!

Our Back to School deliveries are nearly complete! After 29 special deliveries to the schools we serve, our teams are wrapping up another incredible Back to School season.

Our Mission of Hope office will be closed tomorrow, Friday, August 28, as our team finishes these final deliveries.

We are so thankful for everyone who helped make this season possible—from our volunteers and delivery teams to our donors and school partners. What a joy it has been to see hope delivered to students and educators across Appalachia!

Back to school deliveries have started across rural Appalachia!

As students head back to the classroom, Mission of Hope volunteers are helping fill backpacks with pencils, paper and the school supplies children need to start the year prepared.

For longtime volunteer Steve Jones, one of the best parts is being there with the students, walking with them as they fill their new backpacks.

Executive Director Emeritus Emmett Thompson reminds us there's something even more important on every Mission of Hope trip.

"There's never going to be anything we bring on a truck more important than letting people know God loves them."

That's at the heart of every delivery we make.
