Isaiah 21

Great empires come and go but our great God remains forever. Isaiah’s oracle against Babylon continues as the guarantee of complete devastation is announced for all to hear. God does not stutter; no, His prophecy is absolute. His plan is so easily seen as we look back into history and watch how the Almighty raised up Babylon and then raised up the Medo-Persian empire to dominate them. He put every leader in the proper place to fulfill His plan. His timing was perfect for if an attack had been earlier, it might not have been as effective. His understanding of how much power the military would need to accomplish its goals is obvious, as well. God did not make a mistake or change the plan; He simply executed it in history so that all would have no choice but to give Him honor and praise for it. Why then do we exert so much anxiety over the political happenings in our nation? Every believer should vote because it is a gift the Lord has given us through the sacrifice of many men and women in our armed forces, but we should not fear what could happen or what might occur. Our God has a plan for this nation just like He had a plan for Babylon, Edom, and Arabia. He will execute that plan through whatever means are necessary. We can pray for His will to be done and for our families to be protected from the crazy of our culture. We can serve the Lord faithfully and make disciples as He commanded, but we cannot stop His plan, nor can we change it. We can, however, know without question that our God remains forever and that His plan will not fail.

Help me, Lord, to stop worrying about politics and trust Your plan for this great nation. Help me to faithfully pray for Your will to be done and focus my attention on making disciples of all the nations as You commanded.

Isaiah 20

While some of Isaiah’s prophecies were Messianic or apocalyptic, others were in real time as battles took place that reshaped the cultural landscape of the earth. God used real people to fulfill His prophecies and to punish those who hurt His people or rebelled against His way of life. As the Creator God, every part of the universe was at His disposal, yet He chose to use people to effectively fulfill His bidding. God used the king of Assyria to defeat the Egyptians and the Ethiopians. Isaiah’s prophecy reminds us that God can and will use anyone and anything to fulfill His prophecies. He used the Jews as the lineage for Messiah though they were rebellious and guilty of worshiping idols more than the Almighty. He used the Egyptians and the Ethiopians as tools of discipline and then punished them for their harshness. Under the new covenant, God uses His people, the church, to fulfill His plan and build His kingdom. Do we still see miracles? Do we still enjoy God’s hand of blessing? Undoubtedly, we do, but the fact that He chooses to use us is both humbling and motivating. If we are His instruments to reach the world, then should we not be striving to do just that? God did everything required for humanity to know Him and live for Him through Jesus; now, He calls you and me to take that gospel message to a world that desperately needs it. Are you ready to go?

Help me, Lord, to celebrate the privilege of being Your hands and feet to this lost and dying world. Help me to take the simple gospel message to those in my life who do not know You.

Isaiah 19

The Egyptians are the next empire to face God’s wrath. He promises to confound their military to the point that they begin to fight against each other. They will turn to idols as a last resort but have no real chance against the Almighty. The Egyptians will be demoralized and will be delivered “into the hand of a cruel master.” The Nile which gives life to the nation will dry up and “the reeds and rushes will rot away.” Isaiah tries to warn the people that God will accomplish all that has been prophesied and that nothing will stop their demise. They, of course, are comfortable in their current lifestyle and will not listen to the ‘crazy’ musings of an Israelite prophet. Egypt has forgotten the mighty power of the God of Moses and the many plagues He brought against them. They will suffer for their forgetfulness. I wonder sometimes if we have forgotten the mighty power of our great God. When we forget, we lose the fear factor of our faith that keeps us on the right path. Fear in the Biblical sense is a deep awe and respect for the Lord and His perfect ways. That fear is a powerful motivation in our walk with Him. Egypt lost that fear and suffered the consequences. Have you lost that fear of the Lord?

Help me, Lord, to live in deep awe and respect of You and Your mighty power. Thank You for motivating me to live every day in a manner that honors You through that fear.

Isaiah 18

The oracles continue and this one targets Ethiopia (Cush), a sea-faring people who are feared by much of the world. They are known as a people who are “tall and smooth” and a “powerful and oppressive nation.” They will one day stand before the Almighty and bring “a gift of homage…to the Lord of hosts.” Isaiah reminds us that even the strongest and most feared nations will one day humbly bow in His presence and sing His praises. Humility is a key part of our faith. Without it, we try to do the Christian life in our strength and our wisdom which will not work. As these great empires eventually learned, they stand impotent before our great God. In our flesh, we somehow think that we can win in life without Jesus. Our pride tells us that we do not need to lean on anyone and that we will succeed if we just try hard enough. The Scriptures paint a completely different picture telling us that pride will never lead to victory and that it guarantees a fall. Humility, then, is our only chance at true success. When we learn to lean fully on Jesus, He will guide us through His Spirit into all truth and strengthen us for the journey that has been prepared for us before the foundations of the earth were laid. The great hymn says it so beautifully, “On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.” Are you currently building your life on that solid Rock? As the once proud and powerful Ethiopians learned, no other foundation will hold firm.

Help me, Lord, to humbly build my life upon Your Son. Thank you for Your Spirit and Your Scriptures which lead me to the truth and strengthen me for the journey.

Isaiah 17

The next oracle in Isaiah’s prophecy is against Damascus, the capital of Syria. God once again promises devastation against those who have been a thorn in Israel’s side and tools for God’s discipline. He inspires Isaiah to prophesy against the great city which will “become a fallen ruin” and where “flocks will” find pasture. These people who have worshiped false gods will finally recognize the great authority of the one, true God. They will not turn to their “altars, the work of [their] hands, nor will [they] look to that which [their] fingers have made.” Amazingly, “in that day, man will have regard for his Maker, and his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel.” We, too, are easily distracted from that which is most important in this life by our desires and feelings. We turn to that which promises immediate satisfaction but never produces it. Have you allowed the enemy to distract you from that which is right and true? Isaiah reminds us that we only find hope in Jesus and in His sweet salvation. Everything else is but a shadow of the truth and will never satisfy. Jesus said it so perfectly, “the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:32) Will you set aside the deception that has befuddled you in this season of life and return to the God of truth who promises to set you free?

Help me, Lord, to stop listening to the lies of the enemy and start walking in Your truth. Help me to set my eyes on You, my God and King, and enjoy Your best in every step that I take.

Isaiah 16

Moab is again the focus of Isaiah’s prophecy which promises a day when Israel will rule over the rogue nation. The prophecy also promises that Moab will be a shell of what it once was when God is finished with it. The prophet reminds us that “the Lord gives and the Lord takes away” (Job 1:21) and no human authority can stop Him. Our one reaction to God’s work is to bless the Lord and trust that His plan is perfect even when our finite understanding longs to lash out and rebel. Faith walks through those storms filled with peace and comfort while fear allows those storms to dictate its stress level and decision-making. Do you believe that the Almighty is the only One who gives and takes away? Do you trust that His plan is perfect and that it will be for your good and His glory? A life lived with that mindset is completely countercultural and supernatural. Our flesh naturally allows fear to overrule every emotion and sees worry and stress as normal aspects of life. Faith challenges everything natural and points God’s people to a supernatural life that lives beyond the norms of the culture and walks in the Spirit. Isaiah will not allow God’s people to sit in their despair; instead, he points them to a perfect plan that God orchestrates daily to lead them to the path He has created specifically for them.

Help me, Lord, to stop living in my natural fear and anxiety. Help me instead to trust that You give and take away for a purpose far beyond my understanding so I can live in Your peace and comfort.

Isaiah 15

God provides an oracle for another enemy of His people, Israel. Moab is His next target and will also experience a great upheaval where “everyone’s head is bald and every beard is cut off.” God will devastate the kingdom until “everyone is wailing, dissolved into tears.” Their crops will be destroyed, the grass will die out, and all the abundance “they have acquired and stored up” will be carried away. These people who were greatly feared and highly respected will be nothing but a shell of what they once were. If God can do that to a nation, can He do that to an individual who disobeys Him? God is the God of grace and mercy, and He is the God of truth and justice. He alone can carry the weight of each attribute and distribute them appropriately in each life. God has chosen to make us His children which again requires Him to punish our foolishness as any father punishes his children for their foolishness. God does not get angry with His children, but He does hold us accountable for what we choose and choose not to do. We will never face what Moab faced, but we will face His loving discipline when it is needed in our lives. His goal for our lives is not happiness; it is holiness which will truly make us happy when it dominates our lives.

Help me, Lord, to stay away from sin and seek You with my whole heart. Help me to learn from Your loving discipline and enjoy the holiness it brings to my life.

Isaiah 14

Isaiah’s prophecy reminds Israel that they will one day exist as a unified nation free from the entanglements of evil empires. Many of the Jewish generations never lived in freedom; since birth they lived under the rule of Assyria, Babylon, or Medo-Persia. The prophet now tells God’s people that they will one day enjoy complete freedom from their enemies and will mock those who once ruled over them. They will be the victors and will cherish the independence that the Almighty provides. It will be a glorious day for Israel and an omen to all those who once persecuted and exiled them. We, too, are held captive by enemies that seem unbeatable. God, however, promises us that a day is coming when sin and death will be completely defeated and that we will mock them freely as we live in purity forever. Israel is once again a free nation that faces constant yet unsuccessful attacks from her enemies. The day of her complete independence is not yet here, but it is coming and will be a day of celebration. Our day of independence is not yet here, but it, too, is coming and will be a day of celebration as our bodies are glorified and prepared for eternity. Can you imagine a day when sin and death have no bearing on our lives? We will mock them freely on that day, but for now, we stay the course and wait patiently for Isaiah’s prophecy and God’s promise to be fulfilled.

Help me, Lord, to wait patiently for Your perfect plan to be fulfilled. Help me to stay the course and enjoy Your consistent work in my life even as I wait for Your return.

Isaiah 13

How is it that the earth will be shocked by the day of the Lord? We read prophecy after prophecy of this coming day when the Lord will execute justice on all the earth. He has left us examples of His great power. The Babylonians stood as proud warriors who supposedly could not be defeated. God saw their pride and their violence against His people and raised an army that was stronger and more strategic. Their defeat and devastation shocked the Babylonians though Isaiah and others prophesied of their doom. They were too arrogant, too wise, too sure of themselves and their plans, so they ignored the multiple warnings from the Almighty and suffered the consequences. Our modern world did not learn from their mistake and will face the same consequences. God has provided constant prophecies and promises concerning that day, and He will bring it to pass. The enemy has worked hard to get the culture to ignore the Scriptures and to trust their own ideas and beliefs which will lead to their destruction. Will you trust God’s Word, or will you trust your own instincts and beliefs? Those who know Jesus as Savior stand firm for they are ready for that day. Those who have rejected Jesus and His salvation will face serious consequences that will impact their life on earth and throughout eternity.

Help me, Lord, to rejoice over my salvation and how it changes the impact of the day of the Lord on my life. Help me to bring Your promises and prophecies to those who are ignorant of them so they too can know You and be ready for that day.

Isaiah 12

Praise is a gift from the Lord that we must not take for granted. Isaiah reminds us of a people who will one day give thanks to the Lord for turning away from His anger and saving them. They will praise Him continually for His grace and mercy and will “make known His deeds among the people.” It is heart-wrenching to realize that many even in those last days will forget to praise Him thus the call the “make them remember that His name is exalted.” God’s people must continually praise Him in song shouting His salvation to all who will hear. God is with us; He indwells His people which is the promise of Pentecost. His presence brings a power that is not accessible without the Holy Spirit’s mighty work in His people. Today is the day to exercise that exciting gift and praise the Lord. Praise Him with shouts of joy, with whispers of thanks, with hearts overflowing in gratitude. Praise Jesus all day long celebrating His goodness, His grace, and His guarantee of heaven. Praise Him for His marvelous works on the earth and His constant work at the right hand of the Father. Praise Him continuously because He is worthy of your worship! Today is the day that He has made. Will You rejoice and be glad in it?

Help me, Lord, to give You thanks throughout this day that You have made. Thank You for the gift of praise and for every opportunity You provide to sing, shout, and even whisper praise.
