Through all of history, there has only ever been one true religion. You may call it Christianity, but that is only a nickname. Christ did not start this true religion, He merely advanced it. True religion goes back to the creation of man, when God created in Adam and Eve the desire to worship and gave Himself to be the object of said worship.
False religion did appear in that Paradise, however, when the sly serpent, ever so deceitful, convinced the woman of false religion and it's anti-gospel, that is, the idea that man can be like God. However, the man needed no such trickery, only his desire. Here, we observe the two reasons one may practice false religion: deceit and desire. These reasons are quite fittingly found at the end of Scripture, where they are described as a mark taken by worshippers of an evil Beast which is applied to either the wrist or the forehead.
Of course, the serpent merely introduced man to the false religion. It was man alone who, in the years following this great Fall, spread false religion as far as he could, even to the point that God saw fit to cleanse the world through a great flood. And yet, in spite of such great evil, true religion never vanished. Though uncommon, it continued as an unbroken line, a familial lineage, connected not by flesh but by the Holy Spirit of God.
False religion has taken many forms. In the time that God the Son incarnated as Jesus Christ, one one of them was Judaism. Christ openly opposed Judaism throughout his ministry, leading to his torture, crucifixion, death, and burial. However, false religion had not won; for God, in His limitless power and wisdom, raised Christ from the dead, and in doing so, also raises to eternal life all who put their faith in Christ alone for salvation.
This good news, this true religion, this true gospel, which was first given to just 11 men, persists even to this day. It shall continue to persist, even to the end, when Christ consummates His victory over all evil and casts that ancient serpent, along with his false religion and anti-gospel, into everlasting destruction. And so shall it ever be, that those who put their faith in Christ will be able to freely practice true religion without distraction or failure, for 100,000,000,000,000 years and then forevermore.
