This Is the Lord’s Doing

“Then [Naomi] arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the fields of Moab that the Lord had visited his people and given them food.”
Ruth 1:6

Bethlehem is a prominent town in biblical history. In this town, David had looked after his sheep before being anointed to the throne. One thousand years later, when different shepherds were tending their flocks, a host of angels proclaimed the birth of Jesus Christ in the very same town.
Before both of these significant events, however, came the period of the judges, which was characterized by violence, social and political disorder, and religious chaos. During this difficult era, famine struck Bethlehem, making the town whose name in Hebrew means “house of bread” into a house of hunger and desperation instead.
In these desperate circumstances, a man named Elimelech chose to move his wife Naomi and their two sons to the land of Moab to find food.

While Elimelech’s name means “My God is King,” his decision to leave GOD’s promised land and live in the land of Israel’s enemies may raise the question in our minds as to whether he really was trusting in GOD’s provision or committed to obeying HIS rule.

Moab turned out to be a place of tragedy, not plenty. Elimelech and his sons died, leaving Naomi a widow. After a number of years, though, a small ray of hope broke through the darkness of Naomi’s pain; news reached her that food had returned to Bethlehem. GOD had provided for HIS people in HIS land.
Thousands of years later, we’re tempted to rush past this truth: that GOD provides what HIS people need. Perhaps you know that about your salvation—but how easy it is to forget about HIS daily provision! Do we have eyes to see what HE is giving us and doing for us in our daily lives? At the end of each day, do we have hearts brimming with thankfulness for all HE has done?
One practical example of GOD’s continued provision is the very food we receive daily. And we usually take it for granted.
Nobody ought to walk up and down the aisles of a grocery store with a greater sense of amazement and gratitude than a Christian! Ultimately, it is GOD who stocks the shelves of our stores and pantries. We can say, as we grab our eggs and our milk, “This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 118:23).

No matter how dark and dramatic the events of this life may appear to be, GOD still cares for HIS people and works out HIS purposes, and HE often chooses to do so through unlikely people and in quiet ways.
HE had purposed to work great things through Naomi and her family—specifically Ruth, and it began with bread in Bethlehem. We, too, need to open our eyes to see that GOD’s provision of food points to HIS provision of our greatest sustaining need—our Redeemer, Jesus Christ—and to HIS provision of our highest calling: “good works, which God prepared … that we should walk in them” for HIS glory.
(Ephesians 2:10).

An attitude of gratitude is always welcomed in the ears of our LORD, and Savior. Selah

Unequaled Humility

“Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!”
John 19:5

There Christ stood—HIS head pierced with a crown of thorns, dressed up in another’s clothes, forced to hold a reed as a scepter, all in mockery of HIS kingship—as the Roman governor Pilate declared to the jeering crowd, “Behold the man!” While he spoke those words with scorn in mind, they were ironically appropriate; there stood the Savior of the world, arrayed in unparalleled humility, adorned with a lavish love for the world.

We have much to learn from Christ’s example. As the humble King endured royal ridicule and the “pre-death death” of brutal flogging, HE did not utter a word of self-defense. And for what did they condemn HIM.?

For healing a woman who was crippled for 18 years (Luke 13:10-13)?
For bringing back to life the widow of Nain’s dead son (Luke 7:11-17).?
For bringing Lazarus forth from the grave…
(John 11:1-44)?
For taking children on HIS knee and encouraging HIS disciples to understand that “to such belongs the kingdom of heaven”…
(Matthew 19:14)?
On what basis did Christ’s accusers find it in themselves to abuse HIM in this way?
There could be none. But they did it anyway.

When our humble LORD remained silent during HIS numerous trials, Pilate took offense and felt disrespected. There is great irony here, as this Roman governor attempted to pull rank on the King of the universe! And all the while, that King did nothing to assert HIS authority or save HIS own life.
HE humbly suffered an unjust trial, spoke truth when asked questions, and walked forward even unto death, all on our behalf.
I ask myself: Do I truly see this Man who stands before Pilate, who stands before the crowd—who stands before me?
This is not some helpless individual who can do nothing for Himself.
This is GOD incarnate.
Do I understand why HE went down this road of humiliation?
“Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan”—love and salvation for you and me!
Two millennia ago, there stood a sorry spectacle outside the governor’s palace, in part because Jesus had our names before HIS gaze—names HE had graven on the palms of those hands, side, and feet… that would be pierced by the cruel nails…
(see Isaiah 49:16).

May we never be like the riotous crowd, mocking Christ’s humility, nor like Pilate, looking for Christ to be impressed with us. Instead, behold this Man in all HIS humility—holding this reed, bearing this crown, wearing this costume, hanging on that cross—and see HIM beckoning.
Behold the Man, and know beyond all doubt that HIS love for you knows no end. A love we surely don’t deserve and even reject.
Is Jesus a priority for you.? Is your own salvation a priority for you.? What are the “things” that are.? Is there any evidence of your salvation visible in your life.? Your answers should be a wake up call.

Glorifying GOD in Our Bodies

“It is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.”
Philippians 1:20

Your body, and what you do with it, matters.
More than once in his writings, the apostle Paul expresses great concern about people’s bodies. He asks the Corinthians, for instance, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?”
He then goes on to say, “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body”
(1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

In other words, our bodies belong to the GOD who created them and who sustains them. This way of thinking is at the heart of Paul’s theology.
Paul found great joy in knowing that Jesus would be honored, or exalted, in his own body. It was his chief aim and prayer that in his ministry he would possess courage and faithfulness to do this. For Paul, to exalt Christ meant to make much of HIS great name: to give HIM glory. We see this attitude expressed by John the Baptist, who said of Jesus, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).

Similarly, you’ll never find Paul drawing attention to himself. He saw himself only as a conduit leading to Christ.
It comes as no surprise, then, that when he wanted to establish his credentials as an apostle, Paul didn’t say, “Let no one cause me trouble” just because he was a mighty apostle or because he was used by GOD to preach the gospel.
No—he said, “Let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus” (Galatians 6:17, emphasis added).

Through his body, his commitment was revealed. He was increasingly abused for his devotion to Christ. He finally went to his grave scarred, brutalized, and disfigured—yet through his trials, his cry remained “I will rejoice.”

GOD was LORD over Paul’s whole life: his body, his time, his totality. Only that could bring him such joy. Only that can bring us such joy.
The bottom line is that you are not your own. Nothing you have is your own. Everything is a stewardship, whether GOD has given you much or little. You belong to GOD, your Creator and your Redeemer. One day, HE will raise us with glorified, imperishable bodies….
(1 Corinthians 15:42-44, 51-54).

For the moment, in this life HE calls us to serve HIM in this body. In everything you do with it, then, let your body be an offering that you joyfully lay before GOD. Selah

What Are You Downloading.?

You have two choices.
The World and what it offers. Or,…
The Word of GOD, in the Bible you (hopefully) have.

And when I say “downloading” … I mean,
what are you focusing your attention and time on.? On your phone, your computer, your TV,…what you read,… what you allow into your heart and mind….
That builds you up concerning the coming Kingdom or satisfies your desires for “other” things.

The LORD, does answer prayers when they are aligned with HIS will,… and will deliver you from the worldly fortresses that (may) have dominated your life for far too long. I know this is true, because HE’s done that for me.
Yet, those old habits still beacon my attention. And they will for you as well.
It’s a daily reminder that HIS mercies are new every morning and HIS grace is given in abundance.
It’s a real blessing and a source of victory knowing I’m not compromising myself like I used to.

What are your “fortresses” you still struggle with.?
They may seem like an insurmountable obstacle or habit you just can’t seem to overcome. And indeed you can’t. Otherwise you would.

But Jesus, knows your struggles and hears your prayers.
HE’s only waiting for you to submit your will, to HIS, and truly authentically repent of what you want HIM to accomplish in your life…. And HE will take those former thoughts and desires from you.
It’s amazing when you see and feel you’re no longer “bound” to your former compromises and desires and you have such a comfort KNOWING it was HIM, that delivered you from Egypt…and in true humility,…you say,… thank you LORD. Selah

Chosen by God

“In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.”
Ephesians 1:4–6

In William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, the character Portia delivers a soliloquy that illustrates the playwright’s regard for the principles of mercy and forgiveness:
“Though justice be thy plea, consider this:
That in the course of justice none of us
Should see salvation. We do pray for mercy.”

When considering the doctrine of election—that GOD “predestined us for adoption”—we need to ask not “Why would GOD not choose everyone?” but rather “Why would GOD choose to have mercy on anyone?”
The truth is, if justice alone were served, we would all face condemnation, for condemnation is what our sin deserves.
Yet in HIS love for us, GOD chose that we “should not perish but have eternal life” ….
(John 3:16).

HE did not choose us because of anything in us (which would be the occasion for pride in ourselves) but simply because of the love that is in HIM (which should cause us to praise and worship HIM).

One effect that an understanding of our election has on us as Christians is that it compels us to take our sin ever more seriously, for the purpose of HIM choosing us is that “we should be holy and blameless before him” (Ephesians 1:4).

In other words, while HE didn’t choose us because we are holy, we have been chosen in order that we might become holy. There is something dreadfully wrong when a belief in the electing love of GOD results in our declaring the right to live in any way we choose.
In fact, individuals who consistently, continually live in sin yet claim salvation,…. show that they have not understood GOD or HIS gospel at all.

By contrast, the evidence that we have been chosen by GOD, set apart for HIM, and ministered to by HIM through the Holy Spirit is ultimately seen as we are increasingly conformed to the image of HIS Son.
Growth in moral purity is the ultimate indication of a deep devotion to Jesus Christ. A genuine interest in and wonder at the electing love of GOD produces in us a conformity to Jesus’ own beauty.
What will we expect to see in the lives of people who truly understand this? Likely not bravado, self-centered talk, or empty defenses of the Christian faith.
No—we will see humility coexisting with security, their conversation full of Christ instead of themselves, and lives of joy and sacrifice.
That can be, and should be, what you see in yourself, imperfectly but increasingly. And that is what will grow in you to the extent that you say to yourself with a smile and a sense of awe, “It is not that I chose Him; He chose me.”

His Kindness and Covenant

“For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee “
— Isaiah 54:10

One of the most delightful qualities of divine love is its abiding character. The pillars of the earth may be moved out of their places, but the kindness and the covenant of our merciful Jehovah never depart from His people. How happy my soul feels in a firm belief of this inspired declaration! The year is almost over, and the years of my life are growing few, but time does not change my Lord. New lamps are taking the place of the old, perpetual change is on all things; but our Lord is the same. Force overturns the hills, but no conceivable power can affect the eternal God. Nothing in the past, the present, or the future can cause Jehovah to be unkind to me.

Gracious Gratitude

“Being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light”.
Colossians 1:11–12

Almost everyone appreciates a good gift. Family, freedom, leisure, a warm bed, and a refreshing drink all make for a grateful heart, and we’re all naturally able to express at least some measure of gratitude for them. “Thank you” is a phrase we learn young.
The American revivalist Jonathan Edwards helpfully distinguished between what he referred to as “natural gratitude” and “gracious gratitude.”

Natural gratitude starts with the things we’re given and the benefits which accompany them. Anybody is capable of natural gratitude. Gracious gratitude, though, is very different, and only GOD’s children can experience and express it. Gracious gratitude recognizes the character, goodness, love, power, and excellencies of GOD, regardless of any gifts or enjoyments HE has given. It knows we have reason to be grateful to GOD whether it’s a good day or a bad day, whether we’re employed or unemployed, whether the daily news is upbeat or overwhelming, whether we’re completely healthy or facing a terminal diagnosis. Such gratitude is only discovered by grace, and it is a true mark of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life. Gracious gratitude enables us to face all things with the awareness that GOD is profoundly involved in our lives and circumstances, for HE has made us special objects of HIS love.

When Jonathan Edwards died as a result of a smallpox vaccination, Sarah, his wife, wrote to their daughter, “What shall I say? A holy and good GOD has covered us with a dark cloud.” Notice the honesty in that. There’s no superficial triumphalism (word of the day).
But her husband was not taken out by chance; it was the overruling sovereignty of GOD that determined the right time to bring Jonathan home to his eternal reward. And so Sarah continued, “But my God lives; and he has my heart … We are all given to God: and there I am, and love to be.”

Amid grief, we will never be able to speak words like these from natural gratitude, which cannot help us in loss. Such reflection can only flow from gracious gratitude.

You may be facing difficult or even heartbreaking circumstances at the moment; and if you are not, then that day will come, for this is a fallen world. But in those moments, you can cling to GOD’s love and choose to trust GOD’s goodness, expressed most clearly at the cross. Then, even in the darkest hours, you will know the joy of HIS presence and always have cause to give thanks to HIM.

There is strength, dignity, and worship in being able to say, “The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD”,… (Job 1:21).

Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with HIM

Every Good and Perfect Gift

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning ”.
James 1:17

I am blessed to say every day,..” thank you LORD, you are the giver of all good things!”

Have you ever been shopping for a gift and had no idea what the intended person needed or wanted? You didn’t know what size or color to buy or if the child’s toy was age-appropriate, so eventually you just threw your hands up in frustration and said, “I’ll just buy something! They’ll take it back anyway.”

Gift giving is not always as easy or joyful as it should be. The fact of the matter is, even the best of us can’t give perfect gifts every time.

We lack the insight and the knowledge, and sometimes the resources or even the willingness, to give the right gift. In this we are utterly different from GOD, for GOD is the giver of perfect gifts, and only perfect gifts. HE is spontaneously good and overflows with generosity. HE gives without expecting anything in return, and HE doesn’t restrict HIS goodness based on what we deserve. And no gift from HIM ever needs to be returned.

Not only is GOD perfectly generous, but that generosity never changes. Even the best earthly parents need to be approached at the right time and in the right way because they can be inconsistent. Children learn to choose their moments.
With our heavenly Father, we don’t need to wonder if it’s ok to approach HIM. HE is neither fickle nor quick to anger. We can be confident that HE will always act appropriately. We will never find HIM unaware, unable, unavailable, or unwilling.

Through Christ, HE is accessible and responsive to our hearts’ pleas and our daily concerns.
We are children of GOD, and one of the ways our Father expresses HIS love for us is in HIS perfect gifts to us. Therefore, a mark of every one of HIS children should be gratitude.
If we know our Father’s character, how can we be anything other than grateful—even when HIS gifts are not the ones we would have chosen ourselves?
So, be careful to count your blessings, daily. Remember that all good things are gifts from HIM. Be sure to say to HIM:
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee …
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
Great is Thy faithfulness, LORD, unto me!

Shalom and Pray 🙏
