SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, c. 1905 –
Klamath County Museum’s Photo of the Week for Oct. 20, 2024, shows the original Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Klamath Falls as it appeared soon after its construction in 1905.
The Klamath Basin has been home to many Catholics, starting as early as the 1870s. Rev. C.J. O’Reilly, Bishop of the Baker City diocese, visited the area in October 1904 and approved locations for churches in Klamath Falls and Merrill.
William Worden and a Mrs. Sargent acquired block five of the new Fairview addition in Klamath Falls, the future location of Fairview Elementary. Construction began in July 1905, funded and built with materials donated by local parishioners. The church was completed by November that year.
The building was relocated to downtown Klamath Falls at the corner of 8th and High streets in 1916. It remained there until 1929, when it was replaced by the newer brick church which remains in use today.
