From the Board of the Jewish Community of the Outer Banks:

To member and friends of the JCOB:

I’m sure that we are all distraught over the current, or perhaps we should say never-ending situation in Israel. Once again, violence has been unleashed on the Jews.. It is said that in every generation someone arises to destroy us. That has been true for over two thousand years with no end in sight.

Israel, as the Jewish people in general, has its very religious, sort of religious, agnostic, atheist, secular, socialist, communist, and Jews who really don’t want to be Jewish, groups and divisions. History teaches us that those who “come for the Jews” do not make a distinction as to those groups of Jews. It is important that we can both disagree, but come together in order to survive and prosper.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the Israeli families that are suffering and have loved ones who have been injured, held as captives or killed. We stand in support of all Israeli citizens, whether Jewish, Christian, Druze, Bhai or Muslim.

For about a dozen years, the Jewish Community of the Outer Banks (JCOB) has been sponsoring an essay contest for area students around the time of Holocaust Remembrance Day. This year there were 10 essays submitted. The three winners from the three different student groups are G. Sarde Howell IV, Howell Academy Homeschool, Deanie Kunz, First Flight Middle School and Emily Benton, First Flight High School. For the holidays this year, JCOB partnered with UUCOB to provide meals for OBX Room In The Inn from December 18th to 24th. It was a huge success, thanks to JCOB’s Anne Lyons and UUCOB’s Nancy Byrne at the helm, organizing and guiding the project. Thanks to all who contributed time, funds, and cooking!

OBX Room in the Inn is a faith-based organization providing hospitality, food, and shelter, to homeless adults in the Outer Banks during the winter months and support services year-round.
