The Power of the Present Moment

We are always in the present moment. We all make mistakes. All we can do is learn from the choices of the past, make a reasonable plan for the future, and act in the present. The future is created by what we do now. Every moment is a choice-point. Whatever we choose (knowingly or unknowingly) - everything we think, say and do - has an effect. It is this effect that we carry forward, and it creates our habits of thinking, feeling and acting. Once we are done with a moment, we are done with it. All we can do is learn and move forward from wherever we are. Our only commitment is to do our best right-here-now (our best will vary from day to day, moment to moment) to understand what is helpful from what is hurtful, and then to act from that knowledge, learning and revising as we go.
We are where we are now because of where we were in the past. We will go where we go because of the choices we make in the present. This is much like navigating a boat through the ocean where the navigational choices of the past put us where we are now, and the choices of the present will determine where we go.
When we make a wrong choice we can see it, learn from it and then let it go so we can focus on making better choices in the present. This is exactly what makes Recovery possible - the chance in every moment to choose a different path. The only one that can make this choice for us is ourselves. Only we ourselves can be willing to walk the path of recovery.
