He's holding that Qur'an like it's the most precious thing he owns. Maybe it is.

There's something about that quiet smile not the loud, excited kind, but the calm kind. The kind you see on a child who finally feels settled. Who knows where he's sleeping tonight. Who isn't hungry. Who gets to sit in a room full of other boys and just... learn. Just be a kid.

That peace isn't something every orphaned child gets to have. For so many, every day is still about surviving where's the next meal, where's a safe place to sleep, is anyone actually looking out for me. It's exhausting for a child to carry that kind of uncertainty. No one should have to.

These are real children, picking through what's left behind because no one has given them a reason not to. While we're deciding what to leave on our plates, they're searching the ground for something anything to eat.

It's hard to look at. It should be. But looking away doesn't change what's happening it just means we get to forget it a little easier than they do.

We say wasting food is like stealing from the table of the poor, and this is exactly what that means. It's not a metaphor. It's this. It's a child on the ground instead of at a table.

But somewhere, that same amount of food is the difference between a child eating today or going to bed hungry again.
