One of the problems with human intelligence is that we are so good at defending ideas we arrived at irrationally.

That’s an interesting point. It’s true that humans can be very good at defending their beliefs even if they arrived at them irrationally. This is known as cognitive dissonance. It’s a psychological phenomenon where people tend to hold onto their beliefs even when presented with evidence that contradicts them.

People worldwide hold on to their religious, and political beliefs even though science and irrefutable facts prove otherwise.

Spiritualism's Civil Rights Beginnings

The Spiritualist movement thrived from around the 1840s to the 1920s, and its members were mostly middle to upper class people in English-speaking countries. By 1897, the movement had more than 8 million American and European followers.

It flourished despite the fact that it had no formal body, organization, or scripture thanks mostly to missionary work, tours, camp meetings and other related activities.

Many prominent Spiritualists during this time were female freedom fighters who were vocal in causes including women's rights, child labor, and the abolition of slavery.

Caveat: What follows are strictly the author's thoughts and feelings.

With the recent ruling passed by the United States Supreme Court, we have seen the reversal of Roe vs Wade, ratified in 1973, which granted women the right to a legal abortion. We can only imagine the upset our Spiritualist brothers and sisters must be feeling at this time. The thought of our ancestors working so hard in their endeavor to advance human rights must be a hard pill to swallow.

As Spiritualists, we very much have compassion for all life. However, this latest ruling from the Supreme Court has no middle ground whatsoever and is completely biased against the most fundamental rights of women, taking away their ability to govern one of the most basic of human rights, that of having autonomy over their own bodies.

As a Spiritualist, I feel that politics, and an allegiance to a political party bears some gravity in the arrived at decision to overturn Roe vs Wade, rather than a determination made from morality. I can only think that those who consider this ruling fair are coming from a place of total disregard for the rights of women, a blind allegiance to a political party or a religious bent and brainwashed perspective.

For people living in the USA today, we have free will to choose our own lifestyle and future within reason and within the laws of the land. We have seen many changes to the laws in the past 50 years. It is inevitable that not everyone will agree with some of the laws that have been passed. The objection to most of these changes we have seen come from religious organizations who still to this day adhere to the transcripts from historic teachings found in their scriptures. Some of these religious organizations even shun science and refuse to accept the advancement of humankind preferring to live by outdated thinking, totally archaic for today's evolving world.

If we are to advance spiritually in our society, we will need to look at the honest and moral meanings for the wellbeing of our brothers and sisters when creating laws to live by in an attempt to live together harmoniously as we move forward on our earthly journey. Not all the laws that applied 100 years ago can serve us today, and the laws we make today most likely won't serve future generations and will need to be updated as time moves on.

The world became a little darker on Friday, June 24th, 2022, as we all became aware of women's rights to abortion removed from our laws. If you are okay with this decision, of course that is your right. However, if the Supreme Court of the USA gets away with this ruling, then what next? Justice Clarence Thomas has already mentioned his interest in looking at banning all contraceptives, repealing same s*x marriage, same s*x unions, making it illegal and an imprisonable offence in the USA. Where will it end?

We can all exercise our right to vote, which is a constitutional right for all U.S citizens. It may involve changing our political party on this occasion to make the change. There was a time in this country (not that long ago) when not all American citizens had the right to vote. That was certainly a move in the right direction.
