DO YOU HAVE AN OPEN MIND AND HEART?
Good morning! Our word from the Word for this day is Luke 24:44-49.
44 He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
46 He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses of these things.
49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
(NIV)
Jesus has just appeared to His disciples following His crucifixion. He explains to them that everything that has happened to Him which they have experienced fulfills the plan God disclosed in the earlier writings of the Law and the Prophets. Though it was disclosed it was not as evident until after the events unfolded as they had. Now that the events had passed and God had gotten their attention they could now understand why God had to do what God did in allowing Jesus to die and be resurrected. Just as Luke describes that Jesus “opened their minds” to understand the scripture, so also today Jesus must open our minds through the Holy Spirit so we can piece the puzzle of God’s revelation together. The disciples had the direct benefit of having the resurrected Jesus present to explain from the beginning of the Bible how each fit God’s plan of redemption, but there is more to understand and do since Jesus also explained to them that they would now be witnesses of everything.
An amazing thing about the Bible is that you can never exhaust it; each time you open its pages and read familiar passages you can come to a fresh understanding of its message. Some never discover the wealth offered in reading it; they open it or hear it read and do not easily receive any inspiration from it. It remains a mystery to them. They find little blessing from it and are not moved to reading it because they find no benefit from doing so. Why is it some find such inspiration from the Bible while others find it a confusing collection of words and story?
I suppose there are several responses to this question. I believe some are simply not inclined to reading and others are not given toward reflection on the deeper questions of life. Some are so absorbed in their daily routine or their immediate concerns that they have little or no interest in the Bible; it takes a personal crisis to shake them into giving momentary attention to what God reveals. Others ask questions about life and the purposes behind it. Life is a puzzle and the reason behind events hold a deeper concern even if they do not directly or immediately impact them. For these the Bible is a puzzle which drives them to discover pieces to put together to satisfy their hunger to understand.
Then there is the very way the Bible is constructed. It is history and contains detailed lists of genealogy and schematics for building a temple, and other things that seem unrelated to our life. The Bible contains narrative and stories which compete with any modern day soap opera and describe senseless war and violence. This disturbs the sensitivity of some who find the violence and injustice deplorable and difficult to believe God could have anything to do with. It is within this violent mess that the Christ was born, lived and suffered Himself a violent and to some a senseless death. Some disregard the Bible due to fact that Christ’s sacrifice has not ended this vicious cycle of human conflict and injustice.
Why would God give us something so complicated to comprehend? Why not simply give us a brief statement of instruction to easily understand and follow? Jesus often said “whoever has ears, let them hear.” Jesus himself spoke in parables which bothered His own disciples who questioned Him openly on the reason for doing so. Jesus explained in Matthew 13:13-15 by quoting from the Prophet Isaiah: "'You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.'“ It is not that God does not want us to understand, respond and be saved, but due to the fact our hearts have become so calloused we cannot easily hear. God only invites us and will not forcefully impose His will upon us. Self-interest will drive us to conformity without love for the truth or for companionship with God which is God’s aim what God has designed us for.
It is unfortunate that some do not have a proclivity towards God and the truth. Some Christians conclude from this callousness that some have been predestined to damnation while those of us who possess a more natural inclination toward God have been elected or chosen by God for salvation. I’m not easily convinced of this interpretation. 1 Timothy 2:4 states that God “desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.” Similarly, 2 Peter 3:9 emphasizes that God is patient, “not wanting any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” It may seem unfair or unjust that some possess a proclivity to receiving the gospel while others do not, and that some have been placed in circumstances where they are not exposed to the gospel. We do not choose where we live or the circumstances of our development so this may be where predestination or election comes into play, but never should we conclude that God desires our destruction. Those who “have ears to hear” will be drawn to consider the truth revealed in scripture. The question is whether we have the “ears to hear.”
Upon His departure the disciples would need the Holy Spirit which Jesus had promised to provide them to continue to unlock the truth of the Bible and apply it with integrity to the varied circumstances of human life. Without the power of the Holy Spirit we have no hope for comprehending the truth of God and living it with integrity. Jesus could only open their minds to the scriptures because they already had a relationship with Him. Their openness to Jesus made them open to the truth of scripture. So it will be for us. An intimacy with Jesus will open us to the influence of the Holy Spirit who will be continually present with us to disclose the truths of scripture and empower us to witness the truth in the living circumstances of our daily lives.
Just as Jesus instructed the eleven to wait in the city until the power came from on high, so we must also wait while we live among others who ignore the truth until the Spirit opens our eyes to see. We read and reread, discuss with one another, pray and struggle with the Word until it becomes clear and the Spirit shows the way. Then we shall possess confidence and can witness to what Christ has revealed. Only then shall we have the best chance to break through the calloused hearts of those who do not know or care about the truth the Bible discloses. Are you open to the Word today? Are you working at understanding it with others? Are you mining the truth which will give you and others life?
