FRIDAY FOOD - Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" (Matthew 4:4)

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Proverbs 4:23

When we think about protecting something valuable, we lock our doors, secure our passwords, and keep important items in safe places. Yet Proverbs tells us that the most important thing we can guard is our heart.

In Scripture, the heart is more than our emotions. It is the center of our thoughts, desires, decisions, and motivations. What fills our hearts eventually shapes our words, attitudes, and actions. If we allow bitterness, jealousy, fear, or worldly influences to take root, those things will begin to show up in our lives. But when we fill our hearts with God's Word, truth, and love, the fruit of those things becomes evident as well.

Notice that Solomon says, "Above all else." This isn't a minor suggestion. It's a priority. Guarding our hearts means being intentional about what we watch, listen to, dwell on, and pursue. It means regularly spending time with God so that His truth has the loudest voice in our lives.

Today, take a moment to examine what has been influencing your heart lately. Is it drawing you closer to Christ or pulling you away? Ask God to help you protect your heart and fill it with things that honor Him.

FRIDAY FOOD - Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" (Matthew 4:4)

Psalm 145 is a psalm of praise. David lifts his eyes above his circumstances and focuses on the character of God. He remembers that God is not careless, unfair, distant, or unreliable.

David says:
“The Lord is righteous in all his ways
and faithful in all he does.
The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.”
Psalm 145:17–18, NIV

Notice what David declares: The Lord is near.
Near to the hurting
Near to the weary
Near to those who call on Him in truth

Before David says God is near, he reminds us that God is righteous and faithful. That means God always does what is right, and He can always be trusted to do what is good. His nearness is not random. His care is not uncertain. His presence is rooted in His perfect character.

Sometimes we wonder if God hears us. We pray, but the answer does not come right away. We call out, but the burden still feels heavy. Yet Psalm 145 reminds us that God’s nearness is not measured by how quickly our circumstances change. He is near because He is faithful.

And He is near to those who call on Him “in truth.” That means God is not asking for polished prayers or perfect words. He invites us to come sincerely, with open hearts and honest dependence. The prayer that reaches Him is not the one that sounds the strongest, but the one that is offered in truth.

When you call on Him in truth, you are calling on the righteous and faithful God who draws near to His people.

He is righteous in His ways
He is faithful in His works
And He is near when you call

FRIDAY FOOD - Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" (Matthew 4:4)

Sometimes it is easier for us to see God as disapproving, mad, and angry with us. And let’s face it…we give God so many reasons to feel his way. We are sinners who fall desperately short of God’s commands for us.

When we read the words of the prophets in scripture, we certainly see over and over again God’s hatred of sin and his right judgements against sinners. But the remarkable truth of scripture is that, through Christ Jesus, God fully forgives us and finds eternal (yes, eternal) delight in his children.

Look at this beautiful reminder of God’s delight toward us found in Zephaniah 3:17, which says:

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

What stunning truths to consider and anchor our joy in.

•God is with us.
•God is the Might Warrior who saves us.
•God will take great delight in us.
•God loves us.
•God will no longer rebuke us.
•God will rejoice over us with singing.

You and I didn’t do anything to deserve this royal treatment. We didn’t bring this about because of our good works. Out of His eternal goodness and grace, God chose to lavish us with love and make us his children (1 John 3:1).

Zephaniah 3:17 is a terrific verse to memorize!!

Hide it away in your heart so God can bring it to mind when the Devil and the spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:10-13) try to defeat you by reminding you of how unworthy you are of God’s love. Take your stand on God’s truth and turn back the enemy’s harmful thoughts with this reminder of all God is for us in Christ Jesus.
