Last Tuesday, eight Northlakers joined members of other local faith and service communities to set up rooms for new residents at Sheila Stanton place! We readied kitchens, beds, and bathrooms. It was really rewarding to get these spaces turn-key ready and lovely to work with other like-minded Kirklanders!

Shawn Holmes is a visiting teacher from Seattle Insight Meditation. She wrote:

“Many of us live with conditions that are part of our daily lives—chronic pain, illness, disabilities, neurodivergence, or aging bodies -- which something of us every day. This two-part talk explores how the Four Foundations of Mindfulness can become genuine companions in this ongoing relationship with our bodies and minds.

We'll look together at how mindfulness of body, feeling tone, mind states, and dhamma offer practical ways to meet what persists—not to fix it or transcend it, but to be with it more wisely and kindly. These aren't abstract teachings; they're tools for living with more ease and less struggle, right here in the reality of our embodied lives.”

At our service on February 8, members of the congregation were invited to share one of our hymns that has a deep meaning to them and that they think represents who we are as a congregation. Here are the themes that arose, and snippets of some of the hymns we sang:
Interconnectedness:
“I give thanks to the waves upholding me, hail the great winds urging me on…The wide universe is the ocean I travel, and the earth is my blue boat home.”
Diversity:
“Come, Come Whoever You Are.”
“All the colors, yes, the colors of people parading on by with their banners. …. All the colors, yes, the colors of people now taking their place in the sun.”
Justice and Freedom:
“From the stories of our living rings a song both brave and free… Which demands a deeper justice built by our courageous choice..."
“We are building a new way. … We are working to be free… Peace and freedom is our cry… We can feed our every need. … Start with love, that is the seed.”
Community:
“Gather in peace, gather in thanks. Gather in sympathy now and then. Gather in hope, compassion and strength. Gather to celebrate once again.”
“May I have this dance with you? Through the good times and the bad times, too, let it be a dance….”
“We hold you in our love as you go. May your heart be at peace as you go.”
Love at the Center:
“Love will guide us, peace has tried us, hope inside us will lead the way… You can change the world with your love.”

Our Share the Plate Recipient for February is Friends of Youth.

Friends of Youth services accompany youth and young families as they achieve and surpass their goals—while facing circumstances of homelessness, foster care and behavioral health challenges.
Since 1951, they have provided hope, community, and opportunities for growth to young people (age 18 – 24) in King County. Services include: employment and job readiness support, mental health and substance use counseling, transitional housing in Kirkland for young adults after inpatient behavioral health treatment, a drop-in shelter with food and showers, and affordable housing in the Houghton neighborhood.
