At our service on February 8, members of the congregation were invited to share one of our hymns that has a deep meaning to them and that they think represents who we are as a congregation. Here are the themes that arose, and snippets of some of the hymns we sang:
Interconnectedness:
“I give thanks to the waves upholding me, hail the great winds urging me on…The wide universe is the ocean I travel, and the earth is my blue boat home.”
Diversity:
“Come, Come Whoever You Are.”
“All the colors, yes, the colors of people parading on by with their banners. …. All the colors, yes, the colors of people now taking their place in the sun.”
Justice and Freedom:
“From the stories of our living rings a song both brave and free… Which demands a deeper justice built by our courageous choice..."
“We are building a new way. … We are working to be free… Peace and freedom is our cry… We can feed our every need. … Start with love, that is the seed.”
Community:
“Gather in peace, gather in thanks. Gather in sympathy now and then. Gather in hope, compassion and strength. Gather to celebrate once again.”
“May I have this dance with you? Through the good times and the bad times, too, let it be a dance….”
“We hold you in our love as you go. May your heart be at peace as you go.”
Love at the Center:
“Love will guide us, peace has tried us, hope inside us will lead the way… You can change the world with your love.”
