Henrietta Szold, Founder of Hadassah, and Martha Sharp were intimate collaborators in bringing thousands of Jews to Isreal from the end of WWII to 1999. Please see this letter (full letter will be in your download folder) from Ms. Szold written to Mrs. Sharp in 1944.

Also please note: the next 2 months are crucial for the Amazon documentary algorithm. Even if you can't come to Thursday's event, can you please watch and/or review the film in the next 2 months? Then our Amazon algorithm will become much higher, making the film significantly more visible! So please help us with this.

You can also order the Defying the N***s Kindle book and review it as well.

With love,

   Artemis

Defying the N***s is an account of a daring rescue mission that occurred on the precipice of World War II. Narrated by Academy Award-winner Tom Hanks and co-directed by Ken Burns, the film tells the previously untold story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, an American minister and his wife from Wellesley, Massachusetts, who left their children behind in the care of their parish and boldly committed to a life-threatening mission in Europe.

Over two dangerous years they helped to save scores of imperiled Jews and refugees fleeing N**i occupation across Europe. With narration taken completely from the couple’s journals, Defying the N***scombines the intrigue of a spy novel with an intimate look into the lives of a husband and wife who were willing to put the well-being of strangers before that of themselves and their family.

In 2006, the Sharps were recognized at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem as “Righteous Among the Nations,” the highest honor given by the State of Israel to non-Jews. They are two of only four Americans so honored.

A second documentary option shared by our friend, Evelyn Dove:

THERE IS A FIELD is a film about Aseel Asleh, a 17-year old Palestinian citizen of Israel killed by police in October 2000. Based on interviews and primary sources collected over 15 years, the play offers a uniquely personal lens for understanding inequality as the root of state violence and impunity.

It is performed by Black Lives Matter activists and artists, who reflect upon the parallels they see between Asel’s story and the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities in the United States.

COMMUNITY SCREENING: Friday, March 19 at 12:30pm ET followed by the 1:45pm interview with filmmaker Jen Marlowe and one of the actors. REGISTER IN ADVANCE HERE.

There is also a week of OPEN SCREENING, Saturday, March 13, 12:00pm – Friday, March 19, 12:00pm ET for those who prefer to view the film on their own in advance of the community screening and interview. (Link and Password for the open screening will be made available in the near future). To join the interview on 3/19 you will still need to register in advance at the above link.

Another Wonderful Invitation for Fall:
Dear Fellow Unitarian Universalists,

My name is James Kubal-Komoto, and I'm the Lead Minister at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh. I'm sending this email to all of the lay-led Unitarian Universalist congregations in North Carolina.

I know that being a lay leader in a Unitarian Universalist congregation is never an easy job, and as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, it's harder than ever. However, I believe that this crisis is also an opportunity for Unitarian Universalist congregations of all sizes to work together in new ways, and I'm contacting you today about one possible opportunity.

At the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, our most popular program for adults is a small group program called Chalice Circles. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, all of our Chalice Circles that will begin in September will be held online by Zoom.

Since these Chalice Circles will also be held online, we at UUFR thought we would invite members and friends of other Unitarian Universalist congregations to participate in them as well, especially members and friends of smaller congregations that might not be able to offer such a program on their own.

If you'd like to find out more about our Chalice Circle program, visit www.uufr.org/chalicecircles .

If you think other members and friends of your congregation might be interested in participating, I'd invite you to share the following blurb with members and friends of your congregation by whatever means of communication you use:

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh is inviting members of other Unitarian Universalist congregations in North Carolina to participate in Chalice Circles, its online small group program for adults. To learn more, visit www.uufr.org/chalicecircles .

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Warmly,

James Kubal-Komoto

P.S. If you're wondering why we're making this invitation, it's because we want all Unitarian Universalist congregations in North Carolina to thrive because we know thriving Unitarian Universalist congregations change lives and change the world, and we want to do what we can to make that possible.

As we move across the Eastern Counties we will continue to spotlight the worship services. We may begin to offer two each Sunday as some congregations are using YouTube which allows you to go back during the week to share in their worship. Again Thank you!!!

*Please remember to check by phone, email, or text friends and family to let them know they are in our hearts as we weather this time in our homes! If you need to talk feel free to reach out to me at 919-523-6301. With Faith, Hope and Love, Susan Wasilewski, UUCKinston President.

All are welcome!
