KBC’s 12 Days - Mary

“And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.” Luke 1:46-55

In this passage, Mary has come to her cousin Elizabeth, who is now six months with child. And when Elizabeth blesses her, Mary gives glory to God with a praiseful prayer, a psalm. This psalm echoes many of the old testament psalms.

Notice Mary says she rejoices in her Savior. She was the vessel the Lord used to bear the Savior into the world in the flesh, and that same child she was carrying was also her own savior. What did Mary need saving from? Mary, like each of us, needed saving from her own sin.

It is true the angel told Mary that she was highly favored with the Lord and she was blessed among all women. Mary would do what no other woman in the world had ever been asked to do or would ever be asked to do again – give birth to the savior, the Son of God, the seed of the Holy Spirit of God.

But Mary herself was not without sin, because no human is without sin. Only the Lord Jesus Christ, God himself robed in a human body, was a perfect sinless man, a lamb without spot who would be offered as our sacrifice for sins. And Mary knew her salvation could only come from the Lord.

This Christmas, we are reminded by Mary’s prayer of praise in Luke 1, that we need a personal Savior, just as even she – blessed above all women – needed a savior.

KBC’s 12 days - Shepherds

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them… And the angel said unto them… unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger… And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.” Luke 2:8-18

In this passage, we see the visitation of the lowly shepherds. They were lowly because they had the toughest watch over the sheep, the night watch. With predators active throughout the long hours f the night, these men had to be the most vigilant protectors of the flock. They were also likely young men, the most likely to get assigned the “grave yard shift.”

But we see these watchmen were also willing to be spiritually vigilant. First in following the command of the angel of the Lord to the child Jesus. And then they were vigilant in taking the message that the Savior was born and telling it publicly. Today the word “abroad” means another country, but here it means that they published the messaged widely, out in the open.

The advent of their miraculous visitation lead these poor shepherds to become street-preaching evangelists. They were so prolific in their witness that everyone wondered or marveled at them.

The lesson for the Christian is to bring the message of Christ with passion beyond the walls of your prayer closet, your home, and your church, and to do so with passion and conviction. We are his witnesses and like the shepherds, we should have the wonder and the awe of those we testify of the Lord to.

KBC’s 12 Days- Anna

“And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” Luke 2:36-38

After Simon sees Jesus in the temple, the next person to see him is Anna, an old widow woman who was also a prophet. We see she also dedicated her life to the service of the Lord in the temple, never departing from it. Her employment was to pray any time and at all times. And Anna’s prayers were seasoned with fasting, making them earnest and fervent.

When Anna, this precious servant of the Lord saw Jesus, she immediately knew he was the promised Savior. After giving thanks to the Lord, she took leave of her ministry of prayer and preached the message that the Messiah had come. She testified of Jesus Christ to everyone who was looking for the coming promise of deliverance in Israel.

Anna is a great picture of the ministry of the Christian. Praying, earnestly and fervently for the souls of others, and then when the time comes, giving them the message of hope and redemption that if received can save their souls. Her message is the same message we bring today, just like the hymn:

We have heard the joyful sound:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Spread the tidings all around:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Bear the news to every land,
Climb the mountains, cross the waves;
Onward! ’tis our Lord’s command;
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Christian, it is time for you to bring the message of salvation by Jesus Christ to someone, and continue the work that Anna began when she was there beside him in the temple with him.

KBC's 12 Days - Zechariah

“There was in the days of Herod…a certain priest named Zacharias… and his wife was… Elisabeth… And they had no child… And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office… to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord… And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son… And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. And the angel answering said unto him… behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season… Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son… And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God…. And… Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying… blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.” Luke 1

Here we meet Elizabeth’s husband, Zechariah the priest. His responsibility in the temple was to burn incense at the altar of incense. Incense in the bible is a picture of prayer - as seen in Revelation 8:4 - and was commanded to be burnt in the temple. It is there beside that altar the angel Gabriel appears to him.

The angel comes to he and his wife in separate instances, revealing to them individually that they would have a son in their old age. Despite the miracle of the appearance of an angel, Zechariah doubts the promise of the Lord. As a sign to confirm the promise would come to pass, Zechariah is pronounced dumb until its fulfillment. When John is born and the promise is fulfilled, Zechariah regains his ability to speak and the first thing he does is praise God.

Filled with the Holy Spirit, he gives a prophecy of the imminent coming of the Messiah - the “horn of salvation” of the lineage of David – described as a horn symbolizing strength. The bible tells us in John 1:12, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name…” We have the strength and power to be saved by accepting Jesus Christ.

Zechariah was a faithful and righteous man, and though he doubted the Lord, he continued to be obedient until the fulfillment of the promise to he and his wife. And he foretells of the promise of the coming Messiah, echoing the Old Testament prophecies. His story is another great testimony of the Lord working in the Jesus Christ’s nativity.

KBC's 12 Days - Herod

“When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled… Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also… And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way… Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under…” Matthew 2:3-16

Herod the Great here was ruler over the land of Israel, appointed by the Romans. He is the first of four Herods in the New Testament. Upon hearing there would be a ‘King of the Jews’ born, he felt threatened, and called the wise men to meet with him privately so he could get more information. Herod goes on to lie to them, saying he also wants to worship Jesus. His defensive and sinister intentions are manifest when the Wise Men do not return to him – in response, he orders the killing of the children up to two years old in order to kill Jesus. Herod is a picture or type of Anti-Christ.

Herod does not succeed, as the Lord had told Joseph to take the family to Egypt until the death of the Herod, which would be a few years later. He nonetheless brought great sorrow upon the land, and the protection of his power lead to the tragic loss of innocent life.

This story is a reminder that despite all the joys of the Christmas season, there is a spiritual enemy seeking to destroy the lives and souls of men. In the New Testament, Satan is said to be a roaring lion seeking to devour any he can. If you have trusted Christ, your soul is safe with Jesus and with God as Jesus said no one can pluck his sheep from his hand, or his Father’s hand.

KBC's 12 Days - Elisabeth

“And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived… And in the sixth month… Mary arose… and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.” Luke 1:24-42

Elizabeth was Mary’s cousin, and the child she would bear is John the Baptist. Elizabeth’s conception was by the hand of the Lord as the scriptures tell us she was barren. There are notable instances in the Old Testament where a barren woman was able to conceive after the Lord willed it, and their sons would go on to be greatly used of the Lord – Sarah and Isaac, Rachael and Joseph, Manoah’s wife and Samson, Hannah and Samuel. Elizabeth follows this same pattern and like Sarah is an old woman, passed the age of child bearing. But in the will and providence of God, she bears a son, John, the prophet who paves the way for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Elizabeth was righteous, obeying the Lord in all aspects of her life, and the Lord promised her a child that would be filled with the Holy Spirit even in her womb. Elizabeth also was filled with the Holy Spirit and when Mary came to her, Mary was filled with the Holy Spirit. The story of Elizabeth is a special testimony her life and faithfulness to the Lord, and her reward in being greatly used by the Lord as part of the nativity of Jesus Christ, and bearing the prophet who goes before the Messiah. She is also a great testimony of what the Lord can do with someone who is filled with the Holy Spirit, and how other spirit-filled believers come together in the will of the God for the Lord’s purpose.

If you have trusted Christ as your Savior, you have to be filled with the Spirit to be lead into the will of God for your life. May we be spirit-filled Christians this Christmas season!”
