Volleyball is the second hardest sport to photograph.
First is swimming.

I think as a photographer it’s very challenging and rewarding when you get the right shot in this sport. It’s a competitive sport and why not be a little competitive with yourself to get the right photo.

If you don’t challenge yourself and learn the settings of your camera then you will not improve and will not have the confidence to keep going. Thats the truth. Then there is editing which is still the challenge and keep trying new things. Try different colors. Try different angles. Keep it fresh.

tip #1: don’t follow the ball. Follow the athlete.

The first two I shot horizontal. The rest are in vertical then cropped to horizontal. Really brings the focus on what’s happening versus saving the detail around the subject. Vertical allows for me to see where the ball is in the air.

I use a Canon EOS R5 (45 megapixel) with a RF85 F1.2mm lens. Shoot at 1.2 all the time. I don’t have zoom. In my opinion prime lenses are the best. I love blurry backgrounds and I love how I can shoot 2,000 ISO in a school gym. Also the amount of megapixels helps in this situation. Overall price with 512GB cfexpress b card and batteries is around $6,000.

My settings goes as follows:
SS 1/1600 ISO 2000 F1.2
Electronic shutter
High speed continuous+ 20FPS

Shot 3,800 photos from JV to 5 sets of Varsity. Just one team.
