DAR Southwest Point Chapter

DAR Southwest Point Chapter The DAR is a vibrant and thriving organization and we welcome you to join us! Come join us and make D

Our chapter was organized on April 18, 1998, with nineteen organizing members. We were named for Fort Southwest Point located in Kingston, Tennessee. Tennessee began its participation in DAR work with the organization of the Dolly Madison Chapter on December 18, 1892 in Memphis,Tennessee. The Dolly Madison Chapter later changed its name to Hermitage, which name it still holds with honor. During th

e next five years, an additional fourteen chapters were organized. The growth of the Society in Tennessee reached such proportions by 1935 that it was decided to divide the state into five districts: Appalachian, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Cumberland, and Sequoyah. The Fort was a military post established by General John Sevier under command of Captain John McClelland, in the territory of the United States, south of the River Ohio to protect the settlers and from the Indians (1792-1807). Fort Southwest Point preceded creation of the state of Tennessee. Kingston is rich in history and its river heritage is evident by the graves of many riverboat captains buried in the Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery. Once a major steam boat hub on the Tennessee River, today the waterfront is used for recreational enjoyment. Kingston was founded in 1799 and is the second oldest city in Tennessee. It was the state capital for one day on September 21, 1807, and remains the county seat for Roane County. One of the seven antebellum courthouses remaining in Tennessee is located in the center of Kingston.

On Friday, March 27, 2026 we gathered at the David Webb Riverfront Park in Harriman to honor our Vietnam War Veterans who were in military service during the period of November 1, 1995 - May 15, 1975. Their numbers are getting smaller each year but it is such an honor to place the 50th Anniversary pin and say to them “Welcome home, and a grateful nation thanks you for your service.” The event is sponsored by Caris Health Care, Harriman VFW and Southwest Point Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. After the ceremony everyone was treated to hot dogs with all the trimmings compliments of the VFW and cookies from the Southwest Point Daughters.
