We Are His House

During the time of Christ in the Jewish culture life was centered on the Temple in Jerusalem. As Peter was writing his letter no doubt he was thinking about that Temple in drawing lessons from that picture.

I wonder do you know that you are an integral part of what God wants to do and accomplish in this world. When you came to Christ there was a place that God had for you to make up his “house”.
Peter is teaching us that God no longer dwells in an earthly, material house like the Temple at Jerusalem or any church building.

This house is comprised of individual believers that make up “The Church”. Peter makes this clear in 1 Peter 2:5 when he said "You also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house".
When you came to Christ we came into union with Him that is why those that are in relationship with Christ are called Christians. This is unique among the world religions.

Buddhists are not said to be in Buddha nor are Muslims not in Muhammad, in the same way A Confucianist is not in Confucius. Other religions cannot get life from whom they worship only Christians are united and receive spiritual life from whom they worship.

Peter says that God "has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature" (2 Pet. 1:4).

Ephesians 2:19-22 adds, "You are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together is growing into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit."

Christ is the cornerstone of the church, built on the foundation of who He is. It is the truth which comes from divine revelation given through His word. Rejoice in the privilege of being united with Christ and learning from Him!

Valentine’s Day

Whenever we think of Valentine’s Day we see it as a day for couples to show their love to one another. I wonder how many of us use it to remind us of God’s love for us. Many single people can be bitter because Valentine’s Day reminds them of their singleness and desire for a relationship, I am glad that God loves all of us regardless if we are single or in a relationship.

1 John 4:8 says “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love” God is love itself. If it was not for God’s love we would not have any conception of “love” at all.

God further defines love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 defines love this way: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails.”

We often read this 1 Corinthians passage near Valentine’s Day or at weddings to remind us what love should look like, but God is the perfect demonstration of it.

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” He gave up His only son for us. He gave us eternal life because of His great and unmatched love for each of us.

The theologian C.S. Lewis once said, “He died not for men, but for each man. If each man had been the only man made, He would have done no less.” God loves you so much. If you were the only one on earth He still would have sent His son for you.

I am not saying that we should not celebrate Valentine’s Day with our loved ones for it is very important to let them know how much that they mean to you. Theodore Roosevelt said “People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Remember to set your sights not just on earthy relationships, but also on the God above who loves far more fully and abundantly than we could ever imagine.

Spiritual Unity

To a lot of people unity means that we must agree on everything, there can be no room for individual thought. But that is really not what it means at all we can still have unity even if we don’t agree on everything.

I like the seal of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (I do not belong to this denomination) that says “In Essentials, Unity; In Non-Essentials, Liberty; In all things, Charity; Truth in Love.” We can have unity with diversity.

Paul wrote "To the saints . . . including the overseers and deacons" (Philippians 1:1). This was a general reference to all of the Philippian saints, which included the overseers and deacons. His salutation implies unity and submission within the church to each other. Hebrews 13:17 makes that point clear "Obey your leaders, and submit to them; for they keep watch over your souls, as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you."

Leadership is a sacred responsibility with the responsibility to lead, feed, and guard the flock of God which Christ purchased with His own blood (Acts 20:28). They are accountable to God to be faithful in their duties.

The saints have a responsibility as well to obey the leaders that God has put in place. Hebrews 13:7 says, "Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith." Paul adds in 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13, "Appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, and . . . esteem them very highly in love because of their work."

The society that we have now encourages criticism and mistrust of anyone in authority and many have adopted that attitude toward their spiritual leaders. Because of this many churches are weak and ineffective from disunity and strife. Many pastors suffer untold grief from disobedient and ungrateful people and no one should ever succumb to that mentality. Leaders should be honored and appreciated for the work of God they are called to do.

Godly attitude toward spiritual leaders will help bring about unity and harmony with in the church. This will allow the leaders to minister with joy and the church will be ministered to reach the place where God has called them to be.

DEVELOPING IN DARKNESS

I knew a photographer that had his own dark room where he would develop his own pictures. He told me there is a process that he had to go through in order for the pictures to turn out correctly. If he missed a step then the pictures would not develop, they had to spend a specified amount of time in each and every step to have success.

It made me think about our lives and what God wants to do in our lives. There is a verse in Isaiah 45:3” I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches in the secret places, that you may know that I, the Lord, who called you by your name, am the God of Israel.”

There are somethings that you can only find in the darkness and secret places. It is not that God is cruel but there is a process that we all must go through. He wants us to search for him and come to know His ways, this is just the process that he put in place.

We find that even nature needs darkness. In W. Phillip Keller’s book, “As a Tree Grows” he studies several occasions in Scripture where God compares His people to trees. Trees need darkness, said Keller.

Darkness provides respite from the oppressive heat of the day. “Darkness brings dew and refreshment to the foliage of the tree. In mountainous country like Lebanon, where the forests lie close to the sea, nighttime brings its banks of cloud and mist and fog that enshroud the trees in refreshing coolness, saturating the cedars with mineral-laden moisture from the ocean deeps.”

The below is a Devotion from “Developing in Darkness” https://www.davidjeremiah.org/ 12/29/2020
“Sometimes we go through seasons of darkness, when our circumstances are not sunny and our spirits aren’t as bright as usual. But God works in our hearts during such times, and He can use these periods to increase our sturdiness and fruitfulness.
He also makes the sun arise right on time, replacing fear with joy and sadness with gladness. With Him near, we never need to fear the dark. It’s sometimes where negatives develop into pictures of grace.”

Where Do I Turn

In times like these we need to know where to put our trust. Many people put their trust in work, homes, cars, bank accounts, people and many other things. In today’s situation we find that none of these things will do the job.

We need something so much more than the temporal things or even other people. While we may pour our lives, our blood, our sweat and tears into these things, they just don’t last.

You may ask, “What will last?” I would suggest that the Bible has the answer to your problems. You may not see exactly the thing that you are going through; however, the Bible does point us to principals that we can put into practice. One passage of scripture I believe can address a lot of what we feel and maybe worry about is found in Philippians 4:4-8 (KJV). It begins with a command from God: 4 “ Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.” It does not say that we are not going to have problems. The word tells us to “REJOICE ALWAYS” in every situation. Instead of focusing on our problems we should look to the “LORD”!!

The word also says: 5 “ Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.” I like the way the NASV reads, “Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.” The Bible says, “let”, something that we must do, a decision, not just what we feel but what we know. That is where faith comes in. When we know Him and his word then we can know that the Lord is near.

We must then: 6 “ Be careful for nothing; (Be anxious for nothing) but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” This gives us the recipe for having a thankful and blessed life. We will then find what we need which is: 7 “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

In times like these the Bible tells us what to think on: 8 “ Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

The Sand And Stars

I remember in the 60’s when I was young I would lay on the hood of my Dad’s car at night and look up at the stars and imagine what might be out there in the great unknown that was years ago but I still imagine at times.

Jeff McCord’s article in the Kingsport Times-News on Jan 18, 2025 “The difference between sand and stars in the sky” he said that he has a friend that “happens to keep a small jar on his desk. And in that jar, there are 2 million grains of sand. My friend knows this because he counted them under a microscope.”

He also said “that there are approximately 360,000 kilometers of sandy beaches on the earth.” “According to the Harvard Crimson Review there are at least 300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the sky.” “If we do the math right, that means for every grain of sand on all the beaches in all of the world there are at least 6,944 stars in the sky, give or take a few stars.”

We may never know how many grains of sand or stars in the sky, but we can know the creator that made it all. He then said “the same Creator of the sand and the stars knows us and wants the best for us, because he is our Creator as well.”

David said in Psalm 139:1-2 "You have searched me, LORD, and you know me, you know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar"

If God knows me by name, then God knows my story, my heritage, my beginning, and my end, He knows all about me.

Jesus said in Luke 12:27-28 “Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?”
Instead of seeking things He said in verse 31 “But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. Isaiah said in chapter 55verse 6 “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:”

He knows all about you, knows your name and what you are going through. He is very near to all that call upon Him. (Psalm 145:18)

Joy or Happiness

If you ask people on the street what they want more than anything, the answer that you will get most is “I just want to be happy.” If you ask how can I find happiness? You will get many answers, depends upon who you ask and what their values are.

Some will say get all you can, and can all you can get; don’t let anyone have any.
Then there is Bertrand Russell that said “To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness.”

If you listen to those around you there will be a lot of opinions. One said, "Happiness is being married." Another said, "Happiness is being single." One cynical sticker read, "Happiness is impossible!"

For most people happiness is fleeting and can be shallow lot of times. The word happiness itself implies, and is associated with happenings, happenstance, luck, and fortune. If circumstances are favorable, you're happy. If not, you're unhappy.

I think what most people are really looking for is Joy and they get lost along the way and mistake Happiness for Joy there is a lot of difference between the two. Happiness is related to circumstances; joy is a gift from God.

Christian joy, however, is directly related to God and is the firm confidence that all is well, regardless of your circumstances. In Philippians 3:1 Paul says, "Rejoice in the Lord". The Lord is both the source and object of Christian joy.

Knowing Him brings joy that transcends temporal circumstances. Obeying Him brings peace and assurance. Even severe trials needn't rob your joy. James 1:2 says you should be joyful when you encounter various trials because trials produce spiritual endurance and maturity.

They also prove that your faith is genuine, and a proven faith is the source of great joy (1 Pet. 1:6-8). Paul also instructs us in Philippians 4:4 to “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!” We live in a world that is corrupted by sin but our hope should be in the living God and not a dying world.

One thing about our God he is able to keep you from stumbling and make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy (Jude 24). We can stand in full assurance of future glory and eternal joy!

Until that time comes, don't neglect His Word or despise trials that come or lose sight of your eternal reward. They are key ingredients of your present joy.

Praying For Others

So many times we only think about ourselves and don’t consider anyone else. It is our troubles, our concerns, and what is going on in my world. Others should be the primary focus of your prayers.

We read in Daniel 9:5-16 Daniel’s confession "We have sinned, committed iniquity, acted wickedly, and rebelled, even turning aside from Thy commandments and ordinances. . . . We have not listened to Thy servants the prophets. . . . Open shame belongs to us, O Lord . . . because we have sinned against Thee. . . . Indeed all Israel has transgressed Thy law and turned aside, not obeying Thy voice. . . . Thy people have become a reproach to all those around us"

Daniel here identifies with his people and intercedes on their behalf that is what the scripture tells us to do. It was a common practice for the people of the bible. We find that Moses interceded for the Israelites even after they sinned by worshiping the golden calf (Exodus 32:11- 13).

When we look at all of the recorded prayers of Paul we find that they are intercessions on behalf of the saints. He writes in Ephesians 6:18 that we are to "be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints."

We also find in 1 Timothy 2:1-4 he says, "I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth."

In the same manner our Lord's prayers are filled with intercessions. Even when hanging in agony on the cross, He prayed for His persecutors: "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34).

When we were saved and placed in the body of Christ he intertwined us in such a way that we are to be dependent on one another. That’s why Paul instructed us in this way “when one member suffers, all suffer with it. When one is honored, all rejoice with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26).

That is why Jesus instructed us to pray, "Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts. . . . And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil" (Matthew 6:11-13).

Today let our prayers reflect a corporate and selfless mentality that embraces the needs of others.

Are You an Observer or a Participator?

The vast majority of us when it comes to enjoying nature and wildlife are observers we love watching from a distance. In the same way most people when it comes to the scriptures are like observers they enjoy them from a distance.

Our attitude toward Scripture will determine your effectiveness in spiritual battle. There are people have always been told growing up to spend 15 minutes in prayer and read 3 chapters in the bible.
It became a chore for them rather than enjoyment, and then when they get older they have no interest in the Bible at all, if they do look at it, it is for just a few minutes and they get no real value out of it.

Then others go from one favorite verse to another, one seminar to another or one book to another they expend a lot of energy but they have little to show for their efforts.

Their lives remain relatively unchanged in any significant way because they never really study the Word wholeheartedly but simply go from one subject to another.

There are entire commentaries written by those who really don’t believe the Bible they have a grasp of Scripture on an academic level but they know nothing of true love for God and obedience to biblical truth and it is a shame.

You don't have to be a biblical scholar to make that mistake all you need to do is to fail to apply what you learn from scripture to your life. Paul encourages us to "Take . . . the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Eph. 6:17).

We need to be spending time in the Word reading, studying, taking notes, and putting into practice what you have read and learned. If you do, your mind will be filled with wisdom and biblical insights.
Your life will be much fuller and richer because the Word has done its work. I like what Paul wrote when he instructed us to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” (Colossians 3:16)
