Chapter 13: 34,35
A New Commandment
"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."
Jesus gave His disciples a new commandment. The disciples of Christ were familiar with the ten commandments. Yet, the new commandment of Christ would fulfill all the other commandments, if obeyed. Jesus taught this truth on other occasions. For example, in Matthew 22: 37-40 Jesus teaches, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." When Christ states that on the two commandments of love hang all the law and the prophets, he is teaching that love for God and man will motivate us to keep all that is taught in the other commandments. When we love God and one another we certainly will not kill each other. Therefore, we have fulfilled what the law teaches concerning murder. When we love God and one another we will not steal from one another or lie to one another or commit adultery and be unfaithful to our spouse. Jesus teaches us that true love for God will result in true love for one another. Christ sets the standard for how we are to love. He states that we are to love each other as He has loved us. Our love for each other is to resemble the love Christ has for us. His love for us is a providing love. He provides all we need, especially our greatest need of being justified before God. The love of Christ is a protecting love. He protects us from harm and evil. He even teaches us to pray in the model prayer that God would deliver us from the evil one. Also, the love of Christ is a perpetual love. His love for us does not end. Christ loves with an eternal love. Paul declares in Romans 8: 38,39, "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. May we love one another like Jesus.

Chapter 12:43
Seeking Man's Approval
"For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God."
John tells us that many of the chief rulers among the Jews believed on Jesus but would not confess Him publicly because they loved the praise of men rather than the praise of God. These rulers were also afraid they would be put out of the synagogue by those who opposed Jesus. What a sad commentary concerning the chief rulers. They were allowing their desire to be approved by men and their fear of these same men to keep them from the praise of God. It is sad when those who profess to believe have no conviction for Christ and His truth before others because they have no true love for Him in their hearts. It is interesting that even in modern times men have not changed. Why is it that men would rather seek the praise of other sinners than the praise of God? The reason taught in the Bible is that men have inherited a fallen nature. Human beings are totally depraved and naturally inclined to reject God and His truth. The Jewish rulers mentioned here in our passage today obviously had no true faith in Christ or genuine love for Him. A Holy Spirit regeneration results in a true faith and love for Christ. The Scripture states here that these men would not confess Christ. The Bible teaches that those who confess Jesus as Lord are those who are the saved. A faith that lacks confession is a pseudo-faith. It is obvious that the rulers John speaks of lacked the motivation to love Christ supremely. It is true that genuine believers can possess great fear in serving Christ and fall short in pleasing Him, but not to the point of a continual denial of Him. Peter experienced denying the Lord at a critical time in his life. Yet, we find that Peter did not continue in his denial. He wept bitterly because of his failure. We discover later in Peter's life that he was used greatly as an apostle and preached on the day of Pentecost and three thousand souls were saved. Our faith in Christ and love for Him will overcome our fear of men and over rule our desire to please men instead of God. May we always seek God's approval instead of the praise of men.

Chapter 11: 25,26
Jesus is the Resurrection and Life
"Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"
Lazarus had died and Jesus was not physically present at his death. When Christ finally arrived to greet Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus, four days had passed. The first thing Martha said to Jesus was, "Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died." It is human nature to accuse God of not doing what we expect Him to do, or being where we think he should be. Jesus responded to Martha by saying, "Thy brother shall rise again." Martha said, "I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day." Jesus then declares to Martha, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?" Jesus points to the fact that He is life. He is the reason that the resurrection is possible. Christ taught Martha that all who have faith or believes in Him has His life infused in them. Jesus states that those who die physically in Him are not dead at all because He has given His eternal life to them. Also, Christ teaches that those who are alive physically and believe in Him shall never die because the life He gives is everlasting. This is the wonderful truth of believing in Christ. He has defeated death and conquered hell. The hope we have in our Savior is a hope that is absolute. Paul calls Christ our blessed hope (Titus 2:13). Jesus proved His statement concerning eternal life and the resurrection to be true when He stood at the tomb of Lazarus and called His name and Lazarus came forth alive from the grave. Yet, the greatest evidence Christ gave proving His power over death was when He resurrected from the grave Himself. The resurrection of Christ is the heart of the gospel message. Paul states that, "if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins." If there is no resurrection there is no salvation or hope of ever being made righteous before God. Paul reminds the Corinthians that, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable." Do you possess the life Christ offers by faith?

Chapter 10: 27,28
The Shepherd and His Sheep
"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."
Jesus describes Himself as the Shepherd of His sheep. He painted a word picture of a shepherd and his sheep to show something of His relationship with His people. The people in the day of Christ would relate very well to what Jesus was teaching. Jesus often used every day common knowledge to teach an important lesson concerning His love and devotion to His people. In the verses above, Christ points to the fact that His sheep hear His voice. When He calls His people they hear Him. He states that His sheep will not follow a stranger. Jesus tells us that the sheep belonging to His fold know Him so intimately they will only hear and obey His voice. When a hireling or stranger calls for the sheep of Christ to follow them they do not heed their voice because it is not the familiar voice of their true shepherd. Jesus teaches us many truths in His inspired word and we must be familiar with what He says to us. Therefore, whatever His word commands us to do we do it out of love for our good Shepherd. If the modern trend is to follow some doctrine that is contrary to what our Shepherd has taught us, we follow the Shepherd. Jesus also states that He knows His sheep. The fact of Jesus knowing His sheep means more than Jesus having a knowledge of who we are and all things about us. Our Shepherd knows us in the sense that he loves us intimately. The word know carries the meaning of intimate love. Jesus knows us lovingly. It is true that He certainly knows all about us and yet loves us with an everlasting love. What a great Shepherd we have! Jesus then speaks of the benefits of being one of His sheep. He declares that he gives to His sheep eternal life and they shall never perish. All of the sheep in the fold of Christ have the security of eternal life. Jesus says His sheep will never perish. The reason they will not perish is because Christ is the Shepherd. He has the power to protect His sheep from all who may try to harm them. We are eternally secure in Christ who has promised that no one can pluck His sheep out of His mighty hand.

Chapter 9:25
When the Blind Are Made to See
"...one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see."
Jesus encountered a man who had been born blind. The disciples thought the blind man had surely sinned in some way to cause his blindness. Jesus said the man was born blind that God may be glorified. Christ proceeded to spit upon the ground and made clay, which He placed upon the eyes of the blind man. Jesus commanded the man born blind to, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam." The man obeyed Jesus and after he washed his eyes he returned with his sight restored. All the neighbors who knew the blind man began to question how he came to receive his sight. Some of the people began to argue as to who this man was. Eventually, the man Jesus healed from his blindness was taken to the Pharisees to be questioned by them. The Pharisees wanted to know who had healed the blind man. They were upset because the healing took place on the Sabbath day, which was a sin according to these legalistic Jewish leaders. It is interesting that the Pharisees were not able to rejoice with the man who had been healed. These men were so spiritually blind they could not see or receive the truth of the Messiah when He was proving Himself before their eyes. The Pharisees began to interrogate the man healed from His blindness to the point he seemed to become frustrated with them. They continually asked him how he came to receive his sight. John tells us that the man born blind did not know who Jesus was at the time of his healing. He finally said to the Pharisees who asked who healed him, "one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see." What a wonderful answer! This man did not know the how or why of his healing at the time of questioning, but he did know one thing for sure; he knew he could see. He later came to know Jesus as the Son of God and worshiped Him. It is interesting to note that the man who received his sight did not know all the answers to the questions being asked by his neighbors and the Pharisees. When the world questions why we believe in Christ we can simply declare: Now I can see!

Chapter 8:32
Freedom: The Result of Truth
"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
Jesus was addressing some of the Jews who had believed in Him. He told them that if they continued in His word they would be His disciples indeed. Jesus knew that those who genuinely believed in Him would continue to follow Him and persevere in their faith. Christ then said to them that they would know the truth and the truth would set them free. Our Savior emphasizes the fact of knowing His truth, which results in experiencing freedom. The truth of Christ is a truth that frees from doubt. Those who know Him know He is the truth. They know His word is true and He is true in His nature and all He claims to be. Therefore, the truth of Christ gives freedom from doubt. Anyone who trusts in Christ has no doubts that His sacrificial death has set them free from sin and its consequences. Christ gives us the truth about ourselves. Jesus tells us that we are in need of a right standing before God because all have sinned and come short of God's glory. Yet, we know the truth concerning the grace of God, which means that God in His goodness has come to provide what we need most. The greatest need we humans have is to be holy before God. The truth is that Christ alone has secured holiness and righteousness for us. Paul the apostle teaches that by faith in Christ God imputes to us the righteousness of Jesus. The truth is that God places to our credit the holiness and righteousness of His Son. James states that, "... the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness...". This truth concerning righteousness by faith was foreign to the Jews of Christ's day. They did not understand how a person could be made righteousness by faith. The Jews believed by keeping the law they could find favor with God. The truth of the matter was the fact that no man ever kept the law. Therefore, no freedom could be found by those who continually worked to be justified before God. Have you experienced the freedom which is the result of believing the truth about Christ?

John
Chapter 7:1
His Own Received Him Not
"After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him."
What a sad commentary concerning many of the Jews in the day of Christ. John tells us in chapter 1:11, " He came unto his own, and his own received him not." The very people who should have rejoiced to see the coming of the Messiah were seeking to kill Him. Jesus stayed in Galilee for a while before going to Jerusalem for the Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles. The Jews in Judea (Jewry) were seeking to kill Him because He had offended them by exposing their evil ways. It is amazing how the depraved mind works. The religious, Jewish leaders who were so strict in keeping the law, which plainly states, "Thou shalt not kill" did not think it wrong to kill Jesus. It is so easy to justify wrong doing in our own minds. The Jews believed Jesus was a deceiver and an imposter, therefore they convinced themselves that killing Him would be just.
The wonderful truth we find here is that Jesus did not let the hatred and injustice of men distract Him from His Father's will concerning the redemption of sinners. He endured the mistreatment and the mockery because He loved the Father and desired to obey Him fully no matter what the cost. Also, Jesus knew His death would purchase salvation for all who would come to Him in genuine faith. The Bible teaches us in Hebrews 12:3, " For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds." Jesus loved those who did not love Him. He endured great opposition from the very people He was to die for. We see this love as Christ was on the cross suffering for us. He said of those who had crucified Him, " Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." What amazing love was demonstrated as Christ died for depraved, fallen humanity. The Jews sought to kill Jesus, yet God's purpose was being fulfilled in sending His precious Son to the cross.

Chapter 6: 44
The Inability of Fallen Man
"No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day."
Jesus was addressing the Jews who did not believe in Him and were murmuring against Him. These Jews were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?" Jesus responded by saying to those who did not believe in Him, "Murmur not among yourselves." Christ then made the declaration that "no man can come to me, except my Father draw him." This phrase speaks of the universal inability on the part of fallen man to ever come to Jesus in his own strength or power. The reason fallen human beings do not come to Christ on their own is because they have a depraved nature, which is contrary to God. Paul puts it this way, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:14). If God did not intervene in drawing men to Christ no one would ever come to Him. We are thankful to God that by His grace alone He does intervene and quicken spiritually dead sinners that they may come to Christ and believe Him to the saving of their souls. It is God who must come to our rescue and convict us of our sin.
Jesus again reveals the fact that men do not come to confess Christ genuinely except by the divine intervention of God. When Jesus asked the disciples what men were saying about His identity, Peter spoke up and said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Jesus responds to Peter with a wonderful truth that agrees with the verse under consideration. Christ said, "Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 16:17). Jesus goes on to declare that upon this rock He will build His church. Do you know by God's divine intervention and revelation that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God?

Chapter 5:23
Honoring the Father and the Son
"That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him."
Jesus makes it clear that He and God the Father are one. The Jews in the day of Jesus would boast about believing in God. Yet, these same Jews were rejecting Christ and making the claims that He was an imposter. Jesus speaks of the importance of believing in Him in verse 24, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." Christ shows the impossibility of going to the Father and bypassing the Son of God. Jesus teaches that in honoring God the Son must be honored also. It is Jesus who came as a substitute to die for sinners. Christ paid the price of redemption required of the Father. God can never accept any work or sacrifice other than that of His only unique Son. God will not overlook the atoning work of Christ who once and for all paid the sin debt for believers. The Father will always honor the Son and the Son will always honor the Father. Therefore, all who come to God for salvation must honor the Son and believe in Him for the forgiveness of sins and the receiving of eternal life. Jesus states in John 14:6, "... I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Peter declares in Acts 4: 12 concerning Jesus, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
The Jews believed they were saved by keeping the law and also because of their ancestry. The religious leaders often called to the attention of Jesus that Abraham was their father. They thought that their physical kinship to Abraham somehow gave them access to God, or at least, brought them into a favorable position before God. Jesus rebuked these legalistic leaders by pointing to the fact that if Abraham was their father they would believe in Him. Jesus would go on to say that Abraham believed in Him and rejoiced to see His day. The father and Son are one and will be honored by all who believe.

Chapter 4:39
The Exponential Growth of the Seed of the Gospel
"And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did."
Jesus gives us a lesson here in the exponential growth of sowing the seed of the gospel. Exponential is a term characterized by an extremely rapid increase as in size or extent. When something is measured and increases to a certain point where there is a rapid burst of growth from that point on, then exponential growth occurs. Barnes in his notes on the passage states, “There is seldom an instance of so remarkable success as this. From a single conversation, in Circumstances, in a place, and with an individual little likely to be attended with such results, many sinners were converted; many believed on the testimony of the woman; many more came to hear, and believed because they heard him themselves. We should never despair of doing good in the most unpromising circumstances, and we should seize upon every opportunity to converse with sinners on the great subject of their souls' salvation.” Jesus gave the truth about salvation to one woman and many came to believe in Him. This is basically how God grows His church. When one person hears the gospel and believes that person shares with another and before long many have heard and believed. Jesus shared with the Samaritan woman and she shared with others and before long many had heard and believed. We should know for sure that telling just one person about Christ could be the means God would use to save a community, a city, or state, or nation. May we be praying daily for opportunities to share the gospel with those whom God brings into our paths. May we be enabled to say to others, "Come and drink of the living water offered by Christ and quench your spiritual thirst forever ."
