Eternal and loving God, you are the true bread of heaven sent to us that we might feed upon eternal life. You are the one who knows our deepest needs and our unfilled hunger that drives us to a life without compassion, without love, and without knowledge of the true bread. We come to you as individuals who are broken by sin, who are weighed down by the world, and who have trouble believing you are the one who has been sent from heaven to be the bread of life. Please feed us that the flames of faith might be ignited within our hearts, that the flame of your spirit might burn uncontrollable in our lives, that it might not be contained but catch the world on fire. Help us to live, not by the passions of our sin, but by the driven need of your Spirit that we might abide in you and you in us, that our lives might reflect your compassion and your love. Help us to live differently as the body of Christ. Amen.

A Mother's Day Prayer:

Eternal God, who fills the world with love and mercy,

Your maternal character is displayed all around us in many ways. You care for us and love each of us as a mother cares and loves her children. In her eyes, we see your love. We see your maternal image reflected in all women as something that is natural and beautiful. It is humbling to behold the wonders of your creation, especially when it is deep within our own being. The impression of your image is hidden in plain sight for all to see if we would only stop, sit for a minute, and look around.

Lord, as we look around today, we see the blessing of family and mothers all around us. And yes, we now know that being mother is more than biology. We thank you for the creation of the many different kinds of mothers, and we thank you for all the women who share their motherly gifts.

But, we are not so naive that we have no understanding and lamentation that suffering, grief, sin, death, and the daily struggles of life are always present with us.

For those who have lost a child…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who have experienced the deep pain of a miscarriage…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who have had a child run away…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who have had failed adoptions…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who are infertile…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who have had an abortion…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who are single and desire be a mother…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who have painfully and selflessly given up their child for adoption…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who have experienced heartache and disappointment…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who have sick and dying children…Lord, hear our prayer.

For the step-moms, foster-moms, mentor-moms, and spiritual-moms…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who have empty nests…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who are losing, or have lost their mothers…Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who are single mothers…Lord, hear our prayer.

For all the children who desperately need a mother …Lord, hear our prayer.

Lord, on this day dedicated to mothers, we need the love and care of mothers, for we are ever in need of your love and grace experienced in their motherly ways. Lord, hear our prayer. Amen.

I wonder what the life of the church would be like if the church spent more time in praise, worship, and wonder. I wonder...

Almighty, loving, merciful, kind, generous, benevolent, grace-giving, blessing-bestowing, eternal God from everlasting to everlasting,

May your great name and your great love forever be praised at the mighty work of your hands and your great salvation. As we consider the breath that is our lives, and the love you have for each of us, we lift our hearts to you in praise. With humility, we surrender our lives to the grace and mercy of your guiding hand.

Today we sing to you a new song. Today we rejoice in the salvation you bring into our lives. We say aloud at the top of our lungs with the One Church and the Communion of Saints, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” We rejoice in the saving grace of Jesus Christ. May our lives be filled with the victory of your salvation. Amen.
