Last weekend we loaded up the church van and the Moreno bus and took the youth to Rock the Universe. Some people might find that crazy, 20 something youth being set free into the wild wild universe of a theme park.... but never one time did I have a doubt in our youth's ability to make good choices. Not one single doubt.
Let me tell you the reasons for my lack of doubt:
1. Our youth are heavily invested in their bibles. Test them, they will swing for it every time.
2. They are respectful, polite, and kind to one another, the adults in our congregation, and strangers.
3. They don't complain when hard work is required of them. They raised almost every dollar for their in trip. They showed up to every fundraiser and went above and beyond what was asked of them.
4. As they unloaded out of the vans and walked into the park all of them independently looked at their leaders and said, "Thank you for bringing us"
5. We had not one single squabble, bicker, meanness, hurt feelings.... not one single instance of it. They stayed together and they actively facilitated making sure each of the members of their group had the opportunity to do what they wanted to do.
Now let me tell you why I believe they were able to accomplish this:
1. We have incredible youth leaders. I mean that with my entire being. These adults consistently show up, pour in and nurture these kids.
2. The youth know their youth leaders have their backs and they know this because their youth leaders consistently show them regardless of what it is- they will make it happen. Case and point: one of the youth wanted to shop on the last day and to do that she wanted to go clear across the parks to the other side. 2 of her youth leaders trekked over to the other side with her, she looked in the shops for 2 minutes and then decided what she really wanted was in the other park she had just come from. Her youth leaders laughed and then made the trekk back to the other side. NOT ONE SINGLE COMPLAINT from them.
3. All of our leaders have full time jobs, are raising families and some of them are also in college. They still show up.
4. Matthew 7:15-20 reminds us we will be known by our fruits. A bad tree cannot bear good fruit, likewise a good tree cannot bear bad fruit. Therefore by their fruits you will know them. We have INCREDIBLE LEADERS, THEREFORE WE HAVE INCREDIBLE YOUTH.
So, there you have it. A true recipe for success.
One person alone cannot run a ministry, it takes a body and this youth group has a fleet behind them that love them, want to see them grow in the Lord, and will actively pursue that goal.
GOD IS SO GOOD.
