Rufus David White, lovingly known as “Mickey,” passed away on April 15, 2026 in College Station, Texas.
Born on April 18, 1937, in San Angelo, Texas, Rufus was the son of Rufus Abner White and Della Camilla Thurston. He was given the nickname “Mickey” as a newborn when his father said he “looked like a little mouse,” a name that stayed with him throughout his life among those closest to him.
Rufus often shared stories of his early years growing up during the Great Depression—years marked by frequent moves, hard work, and resilience. From farm life caring for animals to childhood mischief and adventure, his stories were filled with humor and honesty. He would laugh about moments like putting peanuts in his drink just to watch it fizz, or the time he unintentionally started a small fire as a curious child—stories that reflected both his playful spirit and the times he lived through.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After his service, he built a career as an engineer with the phone company, where his love for numbers and problem-solving served him well.
Rufus was a man of strong character and deep faith. He believed in doing what was right, no matter the outcome. Known for his quick wit and unique way with words, he often mixed metaphors in a way that brought laughter to those around him. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, bowling, playing backgammon and cards, solving sudoku puzzles, and putting together puzzles of all kinds.
His greatest passion was his faith. Rufus loved Jesus and was devoted to studying God’s Word. He was a faithful member of Christian Worship Center in Kingsland for approximately 25 years, where he served as a bookkeeper, and in recent years attended Life Church in Leona, Texas.
He is survived by his children: Peggy Hamam and husband Mohamed; Cathy Gardner and husband Chris; Randa Crain and husband David; and Michael White and wife Lorraine. He also leaves behind a large and loving family, including his grandchildren Eric Gardner and wife Mackenzie, Evan Gardner and wife Lenette, Husain Hamam and wife Dana, Jamal Hamam and wife Lena, Jason White, Kallie Nichols and husband Colby, Melody Cobb and husband Travis, Michael White and wife Heather, Rhea Holik and husband Jason, Zachary Crain, and Ziad Hamam and wife Lujain, as well as 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Neola, brother Pat and his sisters Barbara, Polly, and Lou.
Rufus will be remembered for his stories, his humor, his steady faith, and the way he loved his family. His life was a testament to perseverance, integrity, and quiet strength—leaving a legacy that will live on through all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held on April 25, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m., with a graveside service to follow.
Arrangements are under the direction of Harrell Funeral Home, 145 Texas Avenue, Kingsland, Texas 78639.
