We’re sharing a sermon recently preached by Rev. Jim Allay from Hebrews 12:15–17 titled “What Trials Do.” Rev. Allay shows how trials reveal our true condition and expose what may threaten our Christian walk. Drawing upon the warning about a root of bitterness and the sobering example of Esau, he calls us to watch diligently over ourselves and one another and to pray that the Lord would search our hearts and reveal what lies within us, that we might renew our trust in the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

Our Testimony, Part 7: The Free Offer of the Gospel

We continue Rev. Michael Ives’s 12-part series introducing the Presbyterian Reformed Church and explaining our denominational distinctives, which are rooted in key scriptural convictions held by our classical Reformed fathers in the faith.

In this message, Rev. Ives explains that in the preaching of the gospel, God calls sinners to life and salvation in Jesus Christ, heartily inviting them and earnestly appealing to them to receive what is freely offered.

He shows that this call expresses God’s revealed will and is made indiscriminately to sinners as sinners, requiring no prior qualifications, preparations, or works, but simply calling them to receive Christ as he is offered in the gospel. By this same call, God accomplishes his secret will in the salvation of the elect.

Rev. Ives also considers several objections to the free offer and, in doing so, warns against loading the gospel with preconditions.

We return to Rev. Michael Ives’s 12-part series introducing the Presbyterian Reformed Church and explaining our denominational distinctives as rooted in key scriptural convictions held by our classical Reformed fathers in the faith.

In this message, Rev. Ives explains what our fathers called experimental religion: the concern that our profession of faith be tested by the Word of God, rooted in sound doctrine, and evidenced in genuine Christian experience. He considers the danger of presumption, the duty of self-examination, the necessity of conversion, and the pastoral application of Scripture to the varied spiritual conditions of God’s people.
