Morattico Baptist Church is the mother Baptist church of the Northern Neck.
In the 1770s, the Baptist religion was spreading across Virginia. In the NNK, the growing desire for independence from Britain came with a growing desire for religious freedom. Lewis Lunsford, a young Baptist preacher from Stafford County, found fertile ground for his message in the Northern Neck.
Lunsford was among a small group at Morattico Hall in Richmond County who decided to form a local Baptist church. In January 1778, Morattico Baptist Church was founded with 18 charter members—sixteen adults and two children—and no building.
By 1790, Morattico was the largest Baptist church in Virginia with 495 members. Its diverse congregation ranged from slaves and laborers to free Blacks and gentry. Even Robert Carter III, one of the wealthiest men in Virginia, attended.
Lunsford faced arrests, fines, and even mobs for his preaching, yet he continued until his death around age 40. He is buried in the cemetery of Morattico Baptist, which is still an active church.
Every Baptist church in the Northern Neck—white and Black—can trace it roots back to this congregation.
