Go and Do Likewise

Chaplain LaVina “Viny” Burns
Do you know what I love about the story of the Good Samaritan? Well, let us read first in Luke 10 and then I will share with you. When we begin, Jesus is talking to the 70 men He had chosen to follow Him. Just a thought: Jesus called them and they immediately did what He requested of them – no questions asked! Jesus instructed and told them what He expected out of them and what they were to do in Luke 10:1-11.
In verses 17-18 the men return to Jesus and they were so excited! They realized the POWER they had by their obedience to do things Jesus’ way and how they triumph over Satan and his demons! Jesus rejoiced with them but gave caution– don’t center on having power over the demons, but instead Praise God because your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life!
However, like many, as they gathered around rejoicing, a lawyer wanted to test Jesus so he questioned Him, “How does a person inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered him in Luke 10:27-29:
27) “So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ” 28) And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” BUT – again the lawyer was testing Jesus: 29) But he (the lawyer), wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
To answer, Jesus shares the story of the Good Samaritan:
Luke 10-30-36 (Take the time to open it up in the Bible and read the account)
Listen closely to what I am going to say and what I love: the Good Samaritan was an individual that would take care of someone at the side of the road – bring food to a family in need – offer to take someone to a doctor appointment – meet the need of a family … You get the point. In this case, Jesus used the parable (an earthly story with a Heavenly meaning) to show how many people will look at the needs of another and then close their eyes to the need when all along they could have met it. In this case, the Samaritans hated the Jews and that was a shock to see a Samaritan even touch a Jew, let alone take care of all his needs.
For the lawyer to ask Jesus who was his neighbor, showed he was actually trying to get Jesus off on a rabbit trail so he would not have to hear about Jesus Himself. And at this time, Jesus had not yet died on the cross, but before His death and after, we are taught the same thing: to LOVE the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and spirit meaning a person was to be sold out for the Lord. With that type of Agape Love (a complete LOVE – one that extends to strangers – beyond emotions, but a total LOVE that encompasses those around you) you could then LOVE your neighbor as yourself.
If we want the world to see the Love of Jesus, we MUST love our neighbor. Maybe you cannot help a bleeding person (I don’t do blood and would faint on them), but I can run to the store! I can give them a ride to a doctor’s appointment. I can testify for Jesus when the opportunity arises by my actions!
First of all, please stop and remember the day you gave your heart and life to Christ. He loved you and gave His life for you! What have you given back to Him? You MUST invite Jesus in to live with you and fill you with His power so you can then show the world the LOVE you have one for another! Time to be a Good Samaritan with your life! Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Then follow Luke 10:37, 37) And he said, He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
