Today’s food for thought from our Marriage Enrichment Ministry,

Take time to honestly assess where you may need stronger safeguards to protect both yourself and your marriage.

GO DEEPER:

The last week of my Bible reading plan has focused on the Passover meal Jesus shared with the disciples before going to the cross.

Each Gospel account tells the story a little differently, but one thing remains the same:

Peter could hardly believe he would ever betray Jesus.

Even when Jesus tells Peter that satan has asked for him and that he will deny Him that very night (Jesus also reassures him that He is praying for him and will be there when Peter returns.)

So how does that apply to marriage?

Realizing you’re vulnerable is the first step in protecting your marriage.

The people who believe they are too in love, too respectful, or too committed to ever lie, cheat, or cross boundaries are often the ones who find themselves caught in a tangled web that is hard to escape.

Peter claimed he was strong enough to go to prison or the grave for the sake of Jesus- but when push came to shove he didn’t even want to associate with knowing who Jesus was. When we do anything in our own power, we will surely fail. We need the supernatural help and endurance that comes only from the Lord- especially in our marriages.

Today, my challenge for you is this: if you think you’re not vulnerable, you’re already vulnerable. Take time to honestly assess where you may need stronger safeguards to protect both yourself and your marriage. Then remember, we serve a God who is for our marriage and we have an intercessor in Jesus Christ who intercedes for us daily!

Today’s food for thought from our Marriage Enrichment Ministry…

Do one specific thing today that shows your wife love through action, not just words.
Make it something she can see and feel.

GO DEEPER:

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
— 1 John 3:18

Gary Chapman, author of The 5 Love Languages, once said, "Love is a choice you make every day." That's a truth many married people forget.

We treat love like a feeling that comes and goes. When it's there, marriage is great. When it fades, something must be wrong. Maybe we married the wrong person. Maybe the spark is gone forever.

That's a lie.

Love is not something that happens to you.
It's something you do.
It's a verb.
An action.
A daily, intentional decision to show up for your wife regardless of how you feel.
In my decades of counseling, the couples who last aren't the ones who never lose the feeling. They're the ones who keep choosing each other after the feeling fades. They keep serving, pursuing, and investing even when it's hard.

Jackie and I choose each other every single day. Some days it's easy. Some days it costs us something. The choosing is what matters.

If you're waiting for feelings to return before you act, you have it backwards. Act first. Feelings follow action. Every time.

Today’s food for thought from our Marriage Enrichment Ministry..

Put your phone away for 15 minutes tonight and give your wife your complete, undivided attention. Listen to understand, not to respond.
Bonus points if you turn it into a Date Night!

GO DEEPER:

To answer before listening — that is folly and shame." — Proverbs 18:13

The third secret in 7 Secrets to an Awesome Marriage is CONNECT. Real connection requires real listening.

Most of us are terrible listeners.
We listen to respond.
We listen to defend.
We listen while scrolling our phones.
We listen with one ear while our mind is three topics ahead.
Your wife knows the difference. She can feel when you're present and when you're performing presence.

Jackie told me once, "Ken, you hear my words, but you're not hearing me." That statement wrecked me because she was right. I could repeat what she said, but I had no idea what she felt.

Connecting means going deeper than words. It means reading the emotion behind the sentence. It means asking, "What are you really saying?" and waiting for the real answer.

In my office, I watch couples transform when one of them simply starts listening. Not fixing. Not advising. Just listening with full attention and a heart that says, "I'm here. You matter."

Your wife needs to feel heard. Not just listened to. Heard. There is a difference, and your marriage depends on it.
