A little theology for your Thursday. What is sanctification?

Sanctification is a big word that basically means being changed by God into His holy character.

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, emphasized sanctification as being central to salvation. The moment we turn our lives over to Christ, we are indeed saved, but that's just the beginning of salvation. From that moment, God begins to work in us to transform us through the Holy Spirit. We start to become sanctified, the process by which we continually grow more like Christ, as we seek Him through prayer, worship, scripture, and service.

With God's help, we begin to set aside our old, unholy habits like selfishness, pride, and anger, and we adopt holy habits like love, joy, patience, humility, and more.

That is sanctification, in a nutshell. Through this transformative process, we can reach what Wesley called Christian perfection. That does not mean we are flawless, but we get to a point where God's love is the primary motive of every aspect of our lives, inside and out. Of course, we can never be truly perfect, yet God is continuously transforming us in the Spirit to be more like Christ.

What a beautiful thing sanctification is, and what a glorious goal to go on toward Christian perfection.
