Cemetery Restoration in Western Kentucky

Cemetery Restoration in Western Kentucky BENJAMIN FRANKLIN said "Show me your cemeteries, and I will tell you what kind of people you have."

Cemetery Preservation and restoration
is about finding and identifying old family cemeteries for descendants and the community. Then we see whether they are being preserved by family descendants and if protected by the landowner. If they are not, then our cemetery restoration group under MOUNT, Inc. locates landowner requesting permission to do a cleanup by our preservation group. The landowner u

sually knows his responsibility to protect the cemetery. If he does not know, then a copy of the Kentucky Cemetery Laws are given to him. We are working on a solution for continued maintenance of the old family cemeteries. We try to contact all the family descendants advising them of their responsibility to work together in caring for the old cemetery and not let it grow back up in undergrowth. This remains a continued challenge for our cemetery restoration grooup as family descendants are scattered all over the United States. The ideal arrangement is one the Jenkins were successful in with the Hook Trice Steinbeck Cemetery. Sue Zee Steinbeck Jenkins contacted and organized her family descendants to participate in contributing to an annual cemetery maintenance fund deposited in a bank account for the cemetery maintenance. Sue Zee paid a college student to maintain the cemetery for a long time. He is no longer available, so Sue Zee and her husband Jeff are now the caretakers. Cemetery caretaker is a very good job for retirees or college students. We are hoping to reach individuals in our community willing to assume this paid caretaker position.

FINLEY, Thomas R.
COL US Army, Korea, Vietnam
Silver Star/Bronze Star/Purple Heart

Another Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Hero (1928-2008), who served his country well for our freedom.

Colonel Finley was a high-ranking officer and known as "Soldier Soldier Boy" Colonel Finley was also a close friend and duck hunting buddy with Jimmy Moore. Both met at Fort Campbell and were paratroopers together.

I believe Colonel Finley grew up around Bandana. His father was known as "Doc" and ran a pool hall there.

"His Lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."

CANE CREEK CEMETERY TRUSTEES
'On January 31, 1846, Charles Wickliffe deeded a tract of land to the trustees of Cane Creek Baptist Church, namely: Lewis S. Lee, Bayward Allen, and George Mayberry to be used for church purposes. In June 8, 1888, L. S. Lee deeded to John Hilton, Henry Stom and L. S. Lee, trustees of the church another tract of land adjoining the other part.' (copied from a Ballard County History book) The second tract of land is believed to be the Cane Creek Cemetery; reportedly belonging to their heirs.
Mr. Lewis S. Lee, Mr. John Hilton, and Mr. Henry Stom are all buried in the Cane Creek Cemetery. Both Mr. Hilton and Mr. Stom have stones on their gravesites. Mr. Hilton and Mr. Stom were well known farmers in the area. Our cemetery group is looking forward to locating Sheriff Lewis S. Lee's stone and gravesite, as previously written about in one of our weekly newspaper articles. Locating this missing grave site of a well-known sheriff is one of our cleanup objectives for one of his descendants. The burial sites of Mr. Bayward Allen and Mr. George Mayberry are located elsewhere.
Help us restore this historic cemetery, now full of briars and dead fallen trees. We want to honor the early trustees that gave their all for the Slater community. Beautiful tombstones will be located, raised, cleaned, and repaired to stand for all to see and remember the above listed prominent trustees.
Saturday, March 25th,, 9 a.m. until 1 or 2 p.m. (weather permitting) will be the major cleanup, then we will continue another Saturday with the stone restoration.
You must RSVP by Friday, March 24th. for our pizza lunch and delicious deserts provided by one of our volunteer workers and MOUNT, Inc. directors.
"A lazy person's way is blocked with briers, but the path of the upright is an open highway."

I found such a diverse and complex collection of grave markers in the cemetery confined by the walls of Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, Florence Italy.

Expertly wielding a sculptor's mallet and chisel, an artistic angel details the finishing touches.

I have always been fascinated watching an artist (or any craftsperson) focused on the work at hand, oblivious to whomever might be watching. This is another of my favorite angels I found in Cimitero Monumentale di Milano, Milan Italy.

Grave Care is important to me. I'm enjoying using my new electric (battery powered) lawn mower to provide late-season low polluting grave care in a neglected and overgrown cemetery.

Near where I live, this morning's sun peeks over the hilltop and pierces the fog to illuminate a cemetery which lies among the hay bales in a wide open field.
